Introducing a new X5 Exadata into the Infiniband fabric and need to upgrade the IB firmware on all of the other IB switches before doing so on BDA and Exadata IB switches.

All current switches are on IB firmware version 2.1.3-4. The new X5 IB switches are using 2.1.5-1, so we need to see if that is the version we want to update all of the other switches to. Since the IB firmware comes packaged with Exadata patches, we need to see if 2.1.5-1 will work with the current Exadata patch we are using.

Solution

The BDA Product team has tested and validated NM2 fw 2.1.5-1 for use with BDA racks so the customer can update the fw on any BDA racks to version if necessary.

The Exadata image patches include 2.1.5-1 firmware but it can be applied standalone without updating the server images. Customer is responsible for all patching, however ACS provides patching services for Exadata as a paid service, so they would be best to advise.

The Exadata support team should also be consulted on whether they would support upgrading to the NM2 2.1.5-1 fw on any specific Exadata racks. It may be possible that the Exadata team fw-version support depends on the patch level.
