Goal

On a CT900 blade running RH Linux 6.1 Ethernet interface eth5 is flapping (link going up/down repeatedly)

Mar 20 08:50:46 host01 kernel: niu: eth5: Link is down
Mar 20 08:50:46 host01 kernel: bonding: bond0: link status definitely down for interface eth5, disabling it
Mar 20 08:50:47 host01 kernel: niu: eth5: Link is up at 10Gb/sec, full duplex
Mar 20 08:50:47 host01 kernel: bond0: link status definitely up for interface eth5, 10000 Mbps full duplex.
Mar 20 08:51:02 host01 kernel: device eth5 entered promiscuous mode
Mar 20 08:51:08 host01 kernel: device eth5 left promiscuous mode
Mar 20 08:54:00 host01 kernel: bonding: bond0: link status definitely down for interface eth5, disabling it

 Ifconfig output shows:

# ifconfig eth5
eth5   Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:21:28:3C:D6:12
       BROADCAST SLAVE MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
       RX packets:610471 errors:24031 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
       TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
       collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
       RX bytes:71937152 INC05BT8

Solution

To address this issue the following was added to the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth5 file:

BONDING_OPTS="mode=1 miimon=200 fail_over_mac=1"
