Goal

 How to replace a defective 3Com switch with a PUE card in the SL8500.

Solution

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: 3Com switch is not functional

CONFIRM THE FAULT BY CHECKING: Check status of cap and elevator using SL Console

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :  Customer should vary library offline using SL Console and place the library offline with either ACSLS or HSC.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

Caution: Before removing an Ethernet switch, check whether the library contains redundant Ethernet switches (redundant internal networks) to support LAN A and LAN B and library firmware version 8.31 or greater. If so, you can replace the switch while the library is online and powered-up. If not, the library must be offline. 

To remove the Ethernet switch:

1. Open the library rear doors.

2. If you library does not have redundant Ethernet switches and library firmware 8.31 or greater, request the operator to place the library offline to the Host/ACSLS.

3. Remove AC power to the switch.

4. Disconnect all Ethernet cables from the defective switch.

5. Inspect all Ethernet cables for damage.

6. Disconnect the power cable from the back of the switch.

7. Remove the 4 T25 screws securing the switch to the mounting rails.

8. Remove the switch.

PUE replacement:

1. Install the new PUE into the 19" rack.

2. Insert and tighten the 4 T25 screws.

3. Connect all Ethernet cables.

4. Connect the AC power cord to the back of the switch.

5. Set the PUE switch to on.

6. Close and secure the mounting plate access door.

7. Close the library rear doors.

 

CONFIRM THE FIX BY: Check status of the caps, elevators and SSD using SL Console.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE: Customer should vary the  library back online with ACSLS or HSC, as required.
