Oracle FS1-2 Flash Storage System - Version All Versions to All Versions [Release All Releases]
Information in this document applies to any platform.
Goal
The goal of this Document is to assist the reader in moving a Drive Enclosure from one FS1 to another FS1.
Please make note of the following:
- Oracle Advanced Customer Services is available to perform this process for those that do not feel comfortable doing it themselves.
- It is strongly recommended that the FS1 is updated to the most current software version before beginning this activity, to avoid the risk of encountering Bugs during the move that have already been fixed.
- Before the Drive Enclosure is removed, any data residing on it must first be migrated off of the Drives in the Enclosure. Moving a Drive Enclosure with data intact is not supported.
- The system must have enough free space to enable the migration of the extents off of the Drive Enclosure that is being removed.
- If removing multiple Drive Enclosures from the same FS1, following the process below, one should exclude ALL of the Drive Groups on ALL of the Enclosures being removed at the same time.
- Read this Document in full and also the "Oracle FS1-2 Flash Storage System Expansion Guide" before beginning to become familiar with the steps involved.
Solution
On the FS1 where the Enclosure will be removed:
- Delete any LUNs that are not needed. This will save time because any remaining LUNs will be migrated off of the enclosures that are being removed.
- If the Drive Group that is being excluded is the Primary Drive Group (little blue '1' icon), consider selecting a new primary Drive Group prior to executing the Drive Group exclude. This is not required, the system will choose a new primary drive group if you do not take this action. It is only necessary if you want to control which drive group becomes the primary (i.e.: to ensure that the Persistence vlun is placed on cheaper spinning disk).
- Exclude the Drive Groups that are contained on the Drive Enclosure:
- In the GUI, go to System -> Drive Groups
- Highlight ALL of the Drive Groups that reside on the Enclosure that is being removed. It important to highlight and exclude all of them at the same time, otherwise you will incur additional time-consuming migrations.
- Select Actions -> Remove from Storage Domain. The Status of the Drive Groups will change to "Exclusion in Progress".
- This could take a long time, so it would be a good idea to plan for this, and possibly do this ahead of time.
- You can monitor the progress in the "Tasks" window.
- You will see a "CmBackgroundTypeDomainExtentMigrationCmTask" and possibly several "BackgroundProgressEnclosureZeroingTask - <enclosure_wwn>". You must wait until the "CmBackgroundTypeDomainExtentMigrationCmTask" task completes.
- Once that process completes, the Drive Group Status will change to "Normal", the Storage Domain will be "(unassigned)", and there will be a System Alert that says "Exclude Drive Group Completed".
- Right-click on one of the newly "(unassigned)" Drive Groups, and select "Delete". Do this for each of the Drive Groups. This step should complete fairly quickly.
- After a successful delete, the drives in that Drive Group will turn the drive status in the enclosure red, and the drives as amber, and display them as foreign. You will also get foreign drive System Alerts as each Drive Group worth of drives is deleted. Be careful not to confuse the alerts and accept the drives back.
- Shutdown the FS1 software - menu item OracleFS -> Shutdown.
- Power off and remove the Drive Enclosure (no need to power off any other components except the enclosure that is being removed). Note that the Drive Enclosure is very heavy so you will either need two people to lift it, or an appropriate lifting device.
- Recable the remaining Drive Enclosures as necessary to conform to the wiring diagrams in the "Oracle FS1-2 Flash Storage System Installation Guide".
- Restart the system - menu item OracleFS -> Restart
- After the FS1-2 is restarted, check the System Alerts. There should be a System Alert for "Drive Enclosure Missing". Right-click on the alert and select to "Manage" the alert. Check the box to "Remove Drive Enclosure from Configuration" and click OK.

Run fscli command "fscli topology -list -violations" and review the output to make sure that no cabling mistakes were made. You can alternatively check the Oracle FS System Manager GUI for any Topology Violation System Alerts.
On the FS1 where the Enclosure will be added, follow the steps in the "Oracle FS1-2 Flash Storage System Expansion Guide" to install and cable the Enclosure.
