FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:
PROBLEM OVERVIEW: An Oracle Server X5-4 Internal RAID HBA Card needs replacement
WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :
If the system is up and functioning, customer should revert all the RAID disk volumes to WriteThrough mode to ensure all data in the RAID cache memory is flushed to disk and not lost when replacement of the HBA occurs. As 'root' user, set all logical volumes cache policy to WriteThrough cache mode:
# StorCli64 -ldsetprop wt -lall -a0
Verify the current cache policy for all logical volumes is now WriteThrough :
# StorCli64 -ldpdinfo -a0 | grep BBU
If Storcli package isn't installed on the server you can download a copy from the following Avago website: http://www.avagotech.com/support/oem/oracle/12gb/sas-12gbs-pcie-raid-hba-internal
Once the RAID cache is in WriteThrough mode, perform an orderly and graceful shutdown of applications and OS. Then power off the server and remove the AC power cords from the system.
A data backup is not a prerequisite but is a wise precaution.
Note: MegaCli commands can be run on StorCli utility as well
Orderly shutdown of applications
Shutdown of OS and power down of server
WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
Remove the HBA card from PCIe slot 2 slot and disconnect cables attached to it.
1. Locate the SAS HBA card in PCIe slot 2.
2. If necessary, make a note of where the PCIe cards are installed.
3. Unplug all data cables from the PCIe card. Note the location of all cables for reinstallation later.
4. To disengage the PCIe card retaining bar, push down on the bar, move it away from the server back wall, and lift it to an upright position.
5. Carefully remove the PCIe card from the PCIe card slot.
NOTE: - Whenever you remove a PCIe card, you should replace it with another PCIe card or a filler panel; otherwise, the server might overheat due to improper airflow.
Install the HBA PCIe Card.
- To install the replacement card, connect the cables to the replacement HBA card and install the card in PCIe slot 2.
- The HBA card has two SAS cables (the white labeled cable is 0, and the yellow labeled cable is 1) and an ESM cable that need to be connected before installing the card in the slot.
- Return the server to operation
- Install the top cover.
- Return the server to the normal rack position.
- Reconnect all power cords to the server power supplies and power on the server.
- If the PCIe card being installed is replacing a faulty PCIe card, manually clear the PCIe card fault using Oracle Integrated Lights Out Manager (ILOM).
- For instructions on clearing server faults, refer to theOracle ILOM User's Guide for System Monitoring and Diagnostics at the following link: https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E37444_01/html/E37447/z4000a12165586.html#scrolltoc.
- Restore configurations from the old card to the replacement card.
- If you are replacing an HBA that was already configured for RAID, It should capture the previous config at boot time from the existing metadata on the disks.
- If it does not, you may need to import the foreign configuration or obtain the saved configuration file to restore to the replacement HBA card.
- Import foreign config by entering the WebBios Ctrl [R], Preview Foreign Config, Then select Import Foreign Config.
- For details on configuring or recovering RAID configurations, refer to the Avago Technologies LSI Storage 12Gb/s MegaRAID SAS Software User's Guide, which is available at the following location: https://www.lsi.com/sep/Pages/oracle/index.aspx
OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Verify access to the new PCI card and verify the server will boot and has access to the disks.
