Solution

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED?:

Ultra 1 Workstation product training recommended, but not required.

TIME ESTIMATE: 45 mins

TASK COMPLEXITY: 1

FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: Disk Failure/Fault

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:

The operating system should be configured by the customer such that the disk drive is free for replacement.
e.g. The disk may be part of Solaris Volume Manager, Veritas Volume Manager, mounted file-system, raw partitions, etc.
A data backup may be required to restore data onto a replaced disk.
If a data backup is not required it is still a wise precaution.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE?:

Removing a Disk Drive

1. Remove the EMI door.

a. Use a screwdriver to open up the EMI door.
b. Remove the door from the chassis. You must replace it after the new drive is installed.

2. Locate the defective disk drive. Your system might have more than one disk drive.

Note – If you remove more than one disk drive, take note of the slot each drive was installed into. The SCSI target addresses for the drives are assigned based on the drive’s position. The SCSI target address for the lower drive slot is 0, and the upper drive slot is 1.

3. Unlatch the drive handle and swing it open.

4. Hold the drive handle and pull it out to remove the drive from the chassis.

5. Place the drive on an antistatic surface.

Replacing a Disk Drive

Note – If there are two drives, install the drives into their original slots. If the drives are not installed in their original slots, the system may fail to boot, or file systems may fail to mount.

1. With the drive handle open, press on the end of the drive to insert the drive all the way into the chassis and connect it to the SCSI backplane.
2. Close the drive handle until the release latch clicks and the handle is securely latched to the chassis.

Note – The drive handle will not latch if the drive is not fully inserted into the slot.

3. Replace the EMI door.
a. Position the EMI door on the chassis. The two tabs should be hooked into the two slots.
b. Push the door in until it is flush with the chassis.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:

Boot system and verify functionality. Reconfigure disk as previously configured. e.g. Part of raid set or mounted file-system or raw partition or other. Restart software applications per applicable administration guides to resume system operation.
