FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: An Oracle Server X5-4 PCIe NVMe Switch Card needs replacement

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

If the system is still up and functioning, customer should perform an orderly and graceful shutdown of applications and OS.  Then power off the server and remove the AC power cords from the system.

A data backup is not a prerequisite but is a wise precaution.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

1. Prepare the server for service.

  1. Power off the server and disconnect the power cords from the power supplies.
  2. Extend the server to the maintenance position in the rack.
  3. Attach an anti-static wrist strap.
  4. Remove the top cover.

2. Locate and remove the PCIe riser from slot 1.

  1. To disengage the PCIe card retaining bar, push down on the bar, move it away from the server back wall, and lift it to an upright position.
  2. Remove the NVMe Switch card from PCIe slot 1 slot and disconnect cables attached to it.

3. Disconnectingthe NVMe cables from the PCIe Switch NVMecard.

  1. The NVMe card has four cables (0 through 3) that need to be disconnected.

4. Connecting the NVMe cables on the new PCIe Switch NVMe card:

  1. The NVMe card has four cables (0 through 3) that need to be connected.
  2. The card will have numbers to match the label of the cable so make sure they are plugged in properly.

5. Install the new switch card and PCIe Riser in slot 1.

  1. Re-engage the PCIe card Retaining bar to secure the PCIe cards.
  2. The PCIe NVME Switch card will onlhy work in Slot 1 of the X5-4 server.

 

6. Return the Server to operation:

  1. Replace the top cover.
  2. Remove any anti-static measures that were used.
  3. Return the server to it's normal operating position within the rack.
  4. Re-install the AC power cords and any data cables that were removed but not yet re-attached.
  5. Power on the server. Verify that the Power/OK indicator led lights steady on.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:

Boot up system and verify full functionality
