SolutionDISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED?: TIME ESTIMATE: 75 minutes TASK COMPLEXITY: 3 FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS: PROBLEM OVERVIEW: An Oracle Server X5-4 Motherboard needs replacement WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? : Shut down system and Power down the server. WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE: 1. Positioning the Server for Maintenance 2. Removing the Server Top Cover 3. Remove the SP Card. Caution - Removing the top cover without properly powering down the server and disconnecting the AC power cords from the power supplies will result in a chassis intrusion switch failure. This failure causes the server to be immediately powered off.
4. Remove the Motherboard
5. Install the Motherboard and replace all removed components and cables in reverse order. 6. Return the server to operation by replacing the top cover, returning to the normal rack position and reconnecting the power cords to power supplies. 7. Power On the Server 8. Set the System Serial Number/Fruid if needed. a. login to the ILOM as root and then enter the restricted shell to check the psnc values. Follow the example below to enter restricted shell and use the showpsnc command- -> set SESSION mode=restricted
WARNING: The "Restricted Shell" account is provided solely to allow Services to perform diagnostic tasks. [(restricted_shell) x5-4-bur09-a-sp:~]# showpsnc Primary: fruid:///SYS/FB Backup 1: fruid:///SYS/DBP Backup 2: fruid:///SYS/MB Element | Primary | Backup1 | Backup2 ------------------+-------------------+-------------------+------------------- PPN 33598419+1+1 33598419+1+1 33598419+1+1 PSN 1524NMH001 1524NMH001 1524NMH001 Product Name ORACLE SERVER X5-4 ORACLE SERVER X5-4 ORACLE SERVER X5-4 [(restricted_shell) x5-4-bur09-a-sp:~]#exit b. With a motherboard replacement the system should be able to automatically copy the psnc values from the primary and backup1 containers as long as they match. c. As long as all of the psnc values match and are correct as in the above example this step is done. However if there was an issue during the replacement which caused the psnc values not to propagate automatically the system may need to be prompted to copy the data by either resetting the ILOM or scheduling a power cycle of the system by shutting down and removing the AC. If the SP reset or power cycle of the system does not synchronize the TLI data this will need to be fixed manually from service or escalation mode. These ILOM modes require a dynamic password and an Oracle Engineer for access. If Service mode is needed please contact the TSC and request assistance. d.For Field Engineers: As long as all of the psnc values match and are correct as in the above example this step is done. However if there was an issue during the replacement which caused the psnc values not to propagate automatically then this will need to be fixed manually by using the copypsnc command from service or escalation mode. If you are unfamiliar with this process and require assistance please reference the steps for using copypsnc to fix the serial number detailed in the "How to update product serial number on systems which implement Top Level Identifier functionality (Doc ID 1280913.1)" and contact the TSC if needed.[This section is not visible to customers.] OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE: Boot up the server. Monitor and check the messages file under usual load by the server to check Connect to the ILOM BUI and eventually clear any remaining faulty components (if, of course, they belong to the motherboard unit assembly). PARTS NOTE: REFERENCE INFORMATION: Oracle Server X5-4Service Manual NOTE: Motherboard replacement can lead to to a serial number of '00000000' which will break ASR if the motherboard is not reprogrammed after replacement. In order to reprogram the serial number you will first need access into 'Service Mode' and this requires a long password which is obtained from our TSC backline. This 'Escalation' password is needed to reprogram the serial number of the system board. An Escalation password (similar to service password) is valid for 48 hours, and is provided by our TSC backline. The following information is needed in order for the TSC backline to generate your temporary password granting access to Service Mode in order to reprogram the serial number.
Please refer to document "How to update product serial number on systems which implement Top Level Identifier functionality" (Doc ID 1280913.1) for additional scope on reprogramming the serial number of the motherboard. Attachments This solution has no attachment |
