Goal

This document assists with retrieving drive dumps from an HP LTO Drive over the service ethernet port with the HP LTT Tool.

Solution

In some instances it may be a viable option for the customer or an Oracle FE to get a drive dump from a HP LTO5 or HP LTO6 drive from the service Ethernet port on the drive.

Before being able to get the drive dump from the drive's service Ethernet port, the following needs to occur:

  • An Ethernet cable to connect to the service Ethernet port on the drive
  • The HP LTT (Library & Tape Tool) version 4.17.  Please see Knowledge Doc ID 1014570.1 on how to get the tool.

The default IP address for the service Ethernet port on the drive is 10.0.0.1 so a crossover Ethernet cable can be used or a newer laptop and a standard Ethernet cable, set the IP to 10.0.0.0 or 10.0.0.2 and you should be able to talk to the drive.

Note:  To connect the drive to your network you can change the IP address on the drive with the VOP tool.  Please see Knowledge Doc ID 1014070.1 on how to get the VOP tool.

Once the drive is connected and can communicate over the service Ethernet port (ping is a good way to test connection), start the HP LTT tool and follow the below process to connect to the drive with the HP LTT tool:

  1. Start the HP LTT tool
  2. At the Startup screen you will be prompted to scan for a drive
  3. Under "Scan Mode" click on "Hardware Scan"
  4. Under I/O Mode click on "Ethernet (LTO-5 Onwards)" and then from the "Please select the Tape Library" drop down please select "IP Address"
  5. Then put the IP address for the drive into the "Enter IP Address:Port" box
  6. Click the "Continue" button

The HP LTT Tool should then come up with your drive selected in the devices box.

From that point please follow the process in Knowledge Doc ID 1185771.1 to retrieve and save the dump off of the drive that you are having a failure on.

Note:  It is very important that the drive dump be taken immediately after the failure occurs on the drive so that the failure data will be retained.  If the drive is used for any jobs or reset after the failure the useful dump data will be gone.
