Goal

This document assists with manually entering a drive tray serial number into the SLC (Streamline Library Console).

Solution

For the SL500 we would like our customers to open Service Requests against the drive tray Serial Number.  To make this easier for the customer a feature has been added to the SL500 that will allow customers or Oracle Field Engineers to manually enter the drive tray Serial Number for each drive into SLConsole.  This will allow the customer to have easier access to the drive tray Serial Numbers when they are opening a Service Request for a specific tape drive.

This requires 1483 or higher code for the SL500 and 5.80 or higher version for SLC (Streamline Library Console).

You will also need all of the drive tray Serial Numbers from the back or right hand side of the drive tray in the back of the SL500 library rack.

The drive tray Serial Number should look something like this 574123456789.  The first 3 digits are the family code for the drive product and so in this example the 574 is for an IBM LTO5 drive in a SL500.

To enter the drive tray Serial Numbers into SLC please do the following:

  1. Start up and log into SLC
  2. Click on "Tools" up in the upper left hand corner and then click on "System Details"
  3. Click on the "Drive Folder 1,0,0,0" from the device tree.  This will allow you to see where the drive tray Serial Numbers will show up. Screenshot of the Drive Folder in SLC
  4. Click on a specific drive
  5. Click on the "Properties" tab
  6. Enter the drive tray Serial Number into the "Tray Serial Number" field and hit "Enter" or "Return" on your keyboard.  This will cause the "Apply" button up at the top right of SLC to become active.   Screenshot of how to input Tray Serial numbers in SLC
  7. Click on the "Apply" button to apply the drive tray Serial Number to that specific drive

Do this with each and every drive in the SL500 library.

When a service request is opened on a specific drive, just click on the "Drive Folder 1,0,0,0" in the device tree while under the "System Details" menu.  All of the drive tray Serial Numbers for all of the drives will show up in one list.

This will cause the Service Request to handled in a more timely manner for the drive since the Oracle support engineer will work the issue from the drive side instead of the library side as they would if the Service Request is opened with the library Serial Number.
