Goal

Direct Attach SL150 and LTO6 FC drive using QLOGIC 16g HBA in Point to Point without using a switch and a Oracle x5-2 server.

Solution

Tape Engineering's -Tape Integrated Storage Relations  Group, has reviewed testing summaries from Oracle OEM Drive Engineering, Oracle HBA engineering and our QLogic HBA partner to acknowledge the QLogic 16Gb HBA (PN 710674) for the SL150 tape library direct attach (DAS) with LTO6 FC as bridge and data drives.

The testing has been successfully complete with no known errors as of Apr.24, 2015.

Oracle can claim direct attach support with the QLogic 16Gb HBA on the SL150 tape library and Oracle/Sun x5-2 server.

**** Other hosts 'HAVE NOT'  been certified and would need to be determined or qualified !!  ****

Notes:
1. Qlogic supports back-back initiator and target at 16G without a switch.
2. The one caveat is that 16G speed does not support loop mode.
3. The QLogic adapter is default configured for 'loop preferred otherwise point-point".
4. There is potential that the HBA link could come up in 8G mode.   So when connecting without a switch Qlogic recommends configuring the initiator for "point-point only" mode.  This is one of the settings in the adapter's bios resident utility. This should ensure the link comes up in 16G mode rather than 8G mode.
5. Oracle/SUN  Server X5-2 is powered by two Intel® Xeon® processor E5-2600 v3 product family CPUs and 24 memory slots. With up to 18 cores per socket, this server supports the highest performing processor and delivers extreme compute density in a compact 1U enclosure.

** Please make sure the initiator is running the latest Oracle qualified flash kit.
