FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :  The VSM6 or VSM7 may need to be quiesced depending upon the LED fault indicators.

Take ESD Precautions

CAUTION: Although replacement of a IOM or SIM is not disruptive, upgrading the firmware is disruptive.  If the new IOM or SIM card is found to have down level firmware you will need to schedule a disruptive outage to upgrade the SIM card firmware.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

The I/O Modules (IOMs), which are similar to SIM boards, are hot-swappable so you can replace them without removing power to the system.
A faulted I/O Module is indicated by an amber LED. There could be instances where the amber LED is not lit but the IOM degraded. In these circumstances, a scheduled maintenance window should be obtained with the VSM6 quiesced.
Alternately the fault may be indicated by the "OK" indicator LED not being lit.

Please refer to MOS Doc ID 1621833.1 for a video presentation on the IOM card replacement.

- PROBLEM OVERVIEW:

System can be online but the preferred method is to quiesce the VSM6 or VSM7.

The following disk shelf has I/O Modules (IOMs): Oracle Storage Drive Enclosure DE2-24C (VSM6) and DE3-24C (VSM7).

1.) Replacing an IOM

Important: Do not remove a component if you do not have an immediate replacement. The disk shelf must not be operated without all components in place.  Take ESD Precautions.

a) Locate the failed I/O Module at the back of the disk shelf.
b) Label and disconnect the I/O Module interface cables.
c) Using your thumb and forefinger, squeeze the release button toward the lever hole to release the lever.
d) Grasp the lever and remove the I/O Module, being careful not to damage the connector pins in back.
e) With the lever of the new I/O Module in the open position, slide the I/O Module into the disk shelf, being careful of the connector pins.
f) Push the lever fully closed until you hear or feel a click.
g) Reconnect the interface cables to their original locations.
h) Wait approximately 60 seconds for the I/O Module to complete its boot process, at which time the Power LED should be solid green and the Fault/Locate LED should be off.  All four activity    LEDs should be solid green for each SAS-2 port that has an interface cable connected to it.

The following disk shelf has SAS-2 Interface Modules (SIMs): Disk Shelf 24x3.5" SAS-2

2) Replacing a SIM

a) From the back of the disk tray, locate the failed SIM.  The SIM Locate LED is blue.
b) Label and then disconnect the tray interface cables.  Use two hands to disconnect the SAS cable.

c) Grasp the metal body of the connector with one hand and firmly grasp and pull the tab gently toward the connector body with the other, then pull the connector body outward to extract it from the bulkhead.)
d) Loosen the two extraction arm captive screws using your thumb and forefinger
e) Pull each ejector tab outward and push to the sides to release and partially eject the SIM from the chassis
f) Grasp the middle of the SIM board and slide it out of the slot
g) Pull the ejector arms to the full open position
h) Align the new SIM board with the open slot and slide it into the tray until the ejector arms contact the tray connectors and begin to swing closed
i) Simultaneously swing both ejector arms in until they are flush with the SIM board panel to seat the board
j) Tighten both captive screws to secure the board
k) Reconnect the tray interface cables to their original locations
l)Wait approximately 60 seconds for the SIM board to complete its boot process, at which point ensure that the following is true:
The Power LED is solid green
The SIM Locate LED is off

PARTS NOTE:

P/N 7053644 - 6Gbps SAS-2 Interface Module - SIM card for J4410 JBOD.
P/N 7318548 - 12Gbps SAS-3 I/O Controller Module - IOM card for DE3-24C JBOD.

Upon completing the IOM/SIM card replacement, the following should be performed.

1. Obtain a current support file bundle should be obtained and provided to TSC for verification the issue is resolved.

2. Check the IOM module to see if the firmware needs to be upgraded.  Refer to the document 1571083.1 for precautions.

3. Refer to the latest ASRandSupportFileConfigGuide_VSM6 for checking and upgrading the IOM card firmware.

Clarification note - For a DE2-24C or DE3-24C the Primary refers to IOM 0 (bottom module) and the Secondary refers to IOM 1 (top module).  For a SAS-2 the Primary "0" is on the left looking from the back of the array.
