Goal

How to change the hostname of an IB switch that is running 2.1.x
 

Solution

Original name  "infiniband36p-bur09-a-sp"  new name "newname-bur09-a-sp"

1)    -> set hostname=newname-bur09-a-sp   <<<New name specified here
          Set 'hostname' to 'newname-bur09-a-sp'

2)     -> set system_identifier=newname-bur09-a-sp.us.oracle.com
           Set 'system_identifier' to 'newname-bur09-a-sp.us.oracle.com'

3)     -> reset /SP  (Proper way to reboot an IB switch)
            Are you sure you want to reset /SP (y/n)?




Example from a test system

[root@infiniband36p-bur09-a-sp ~]# spsh

Broadcast message from root (Wed Sep 5 03:15:55 2012):
The system is going down for reboot NOW!
After switch comes back up we can see the system prompt and the ibswitches output reflect the new name.

[root@finiband36p-bur09-a-sp ~]# ibswitches  <<<<<CLI prompt shows new name

Switch  : 0x002128f56745a0a0 ports 36 "SUN DCS 36P QDR newname-bur09 10.152.228.224" enhanced port 0 lid 1 lmc 0<<<<<New Node Description is recognized by the SM
