ESD Caution:
- Circuit boards and drives contain electronic components that are extremely sensitive to static electricity. Ordinary amounts of static electricity from clothing or the work environment can destroy the components located on these boards. Do not touch the components along their connector edges.
- Use a Antistatic Wrist strap. Attach one end of the strap to your wrist and the other end to the chassis, depending on what type of strap you use, with the adhesive end or the metal plug.
- Use an Antistatic Mat. Place ESD-sensitive components such as motherboards, memory, and other PCBs on an antistatic mat.
Contamination Caution:
- Dust particles of packaging material are number one cause of datacenter contamination. Make sure to remove all packaging material, up to the ESD safe packaging material, while still being outside the datacenter.

WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED: M8-8 / M7-8 / M7-16 Product Training/Experience
TASK COMPLEXITY: 3
TIME ESTIMATE: 120 minutes
COLD replacement
FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS
WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :
Physical Domains must be shut down. Server must be powered off.
WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
Determine which fan cable assembly requires service
1. Use one of these Oracle ILOM commands to display faulty components:
- -> show faulty
- -> show /System/Open_Problems
- faultmgmtsp> fmadm faulty
Power off the server and switch off the appropriate PDU circuit breakers
1. Power down the server (requires Oracle ILOM Reset and Host Control (r) user role)
- -> stop /System
- Stopping the server can take some time, and you must wait until the following message appears on the host(s) console before proceeding to the next step.
-> SP NOTICE: Host is off
2. Remove power using the circuit breakers on the appopriate PDU. Turn breakers off in the following sequence :
- For a SPARC M8-8 / M7-8 server:
- Bottom chassis in rack
- R8, R7, R6
- L2, L1, L0
- Middle chassis in rack
- R5, R4, R3
- L5, L4, L3
- Top chassis in rack
- R2, R1, R0
- L8, L7,L6
- For a SPARC M7-16 server:
- R4, R5, L5, L4
- R0, R1, R2, L8, L7, L6
- R6, R7, R8, L2, L1, L0
where R indicates the right PDU from the rear of the server, L indicates the left PDU from the rear of the server, and the number represents the PDU group number.
Caution - Because standby power is always present in the server, you must switch off the circuit breakers on the PDUs before accessing any cold-serviceable components.
Remove a Fan Cable Assembly
1. From the front of the server, remove all four fans from the side of the chassis that contains the failed fan cable assembly.

2. Unseat all CMIOUs or switch units from the impacted chassis

3. From the rear of the server, unseat the SP tray from the impacted chassis
- Check M8-8 / M7-8 / M7-16 How to replace a Faulty Service Processor Tray (SP tray) in a CMIOU chassis or in a Switch chassis (Doc ID 1988151.1) for details
4. Remove all of the internal interconnects from the front of the affected chassis.
- Check M8-8 / M7-8 / M7-16 How to replace a Faulty Internal Interconnect Assembly (Doc ID 1991406.1) for details
- Check M7-16 How to replace a Faulty External Interconnect Assembly (Doc ID 2022844.1) for details
5. Unscrew the bracket at the top of the cable assembly
6. Release all four panel mount connectors on each tab.
- On the black tab, push down on the arrow while sliding the tab to the left until the pegs on the tab align with the slats in the metal brace. Press the tab back to release it.
7. Remove the cable through the opening in the chassis
Install a Fan Cable Assembly
1. Slide the new cable through the opening in the chassis where the failed cable was previously installed.
2. Insert the four panel mount connectors through each of the receiving tabs and slide the black tab to the left to secure it.
3. Screw the top bracket of the cable assembly to the chassis.
4. Reinstall the interconnects in the same slots from which you removed them.
- Check M8-8 / M7-8 / M7-16 How to replace a Faulty Internal Interconnect Assembly (Doc ID 1991406.1) for details
- Check M7-16 How to replace a Faulty External Interconnect Assembly (Doc ID 2022844.1) for details
5. Reseat the SP tray
- Check M8-8 / M7-8 / M7-16 How to replace a Faulty Service Processor Tray (SP tray) in a CMIOU chassis or in a Switch chassis (Doc ID 1988151.1) for details
6. Reseat the CMIOUs

- Check M7-16 How to replace a Faulty Fan in a Switch chassis (Doc ID 1952111.1) for details
Switch on the appropriate PDU circuit breakers and power on the server
1. Switch on PDU Circuit Breakers. Turn breakers on in the following sequence.
- For a SPARC M8-8 / M7-8 server:
- Bottom chassis in rack
- R8, R7, R6
- L2, L1, L0
- Middle chassis in rack
- R5, R4, R3
- L5, L4, L3
- Top chassis in rack
- R2, R1, R0
- L8, L7,L6
- For a SPARC M7-16 server:
- R4, R5, L5, L4
- R0, R1, R2, L8, L7, L6
- R6, R7, R8, L2, L1, L0
where R indicates the right PDU from the rear of the server, L indicates the left PDU from the rear of the server, and the number represents the PDU group number.
2. As soon as PDU circuit breakers are switched on, standby power is applied, and the SP boots.
Return the faulted component to Oracle.
- If the replacement included safety covers on the connectors, install the covers on the component that you are
- In the shipping container that contained the replacement component:
- Using the same material used to pack the replacement component, position the component so that it is not free to move.
- Add any required paperwork or other documentation in the container.
- Except when packing CMIOUs, include any tools that were loaned to you by Oracle. Do not place tools inside a container that is being used to return a CMIOU.
- Close the shipping container and seal it with the packaging tape supplied by Oracle.
- Apply the shipping label to the shipping container.
- Notify Oracle or an authorized shipper that the carton container is ready for pickup.
OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
1. When SP ILOM is available, verify that there is no faulty components
- -> show faulty
- -> show /System/Open_Problems
- faultmgmtsp> fmadm faulty
2. Start the server by running the ILOM command "start /System" (requires Oracle ILOM Reset and Host Control (r) user role).
