How to Replace a PCIe Card in an Oracle Exalytics X4-4
Solution
CAP PROBLEM OVERVIEW: PCIe Card replacement
DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:
Oracle Exalytics X4-4 Server Training.
TIME ESTIMATE: 60 minutes
TASK COMPLEXITY: 1-CRU
FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS
WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :
If the system is still up and functioning, the customer should perform an orderly and graceful shutdown of applications and OS. Then power off the server and remove the AC power cords from the system.
A data backup is not a prerequisite but is a wise precaution.
WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
1. Prepare the server for service.
- Power off the server and disconnect the power cords from the power supplies.
- Extend the server to the maintenance position in the rack.
- Attach an anti-static wrist strap.
- Remove the top cover.
2. Locate and Remove the PCIe card.
- The server has eleven PCIe slots. They are numbered 1 through 11 from left to right when you view the server from the rear (the on-board ports/connectors are located between slots 6 and 7)
- Make a note of the slot where the PCIe card is installed so that the replacement can be re-installed in the same location.
- Unplug any data cables from the PCIe card being replaced making note of the locations so that they can be re-installed in the same configuration (label if needed).
- Disengage the PCIe slot crossbar from it's locked position and rotate it into it's upright position.
- Carefully remove the PCIe card from the PCIe card slot by lifting it straight up from it's connector.
- Place the PCIe card on an anti-static mat.
Note: The Exalytics X4-4 system uses a very specific PCIe configuration and the cards must be populated correctly to operate properly. Care should be taken to make sure that PCIe cards are replaced back into their correct slots when any service is performed.
Configuration:
- Slot 2 SAS-2 8-port internal (2x4), 6 Gb, RAID PCIe Gen 2 host bus adapter
- Slot 4 Dual 40Gbps (4x) QDR InfiniBand - CX-3
- Slots 6,7,and 10 Aura2.1 Flash Accelerator F80
- Slots 8 and 11 Dual FC 16G Host Adapter Qlogic
- Optional - Slot 9 Dual-Port 10 Gigabit-Ethernet PCIe 2.0 Copper/Fiber SFP+ card
After servicing the system the PCIe configuration should match this setup.
3. Install the replacement PCIe card.
- Remove the replacement PCIe card from it's anti-static bag and place on an anti-static mat.
- Make sure to re-install the card into the same location from which the previous card was removed.
- Insert the PCIe card into the correct slot.
- Return the PCIe card slot crossbar to its closed and locked position to secure the PCIe cards in place.
- Reconnect any cables to the PCIe card that were unplugged during the removal procedure making sure to connect them in the same configuration as when they were disconnected.
4. Return the Server to operation
- Replace the top cover
- Remove any anti-static measures that were used.
- Return the server to it's normal operating position within the rack.
- Re-install the AC power cords and any data cables that were removed.
- Power on server. Verify that the Power/OK indicator led lights steady on.
- Verify that the newly installed card is seen by the server and that the system boots properly.
Note: If the card that was replaced was an Ethernet device then the MAC addresses for the interfaces on this card will be different than before the replacement. Make sure to notify the user that these addresses are now different so that they know to change these values in any configuration files as needed.
