CAP PROBLEM OVERVIEW: How to update XCP firmware

To report errors or request improvements on this procedure, please go to My Oracle Support, and  put a comment on Doc ID: 1981625.1

Notes:
  • when upgrading from a version older then XCP1050, you must first upgrade to an interim version of XCP between 1050 and 1070, inclusive
  • use the deleteuser command to delete any accounts named admin prior to updating to XCP 1050 or later; the admin account name is reserved starting in XCP 1050
  • if your M8000/M9000 server is running firmware older than XCP1082, execute the rebootxscf(8) command from the Active XSCF to reset both the Active and the Standby XSCF before upgrading to this XCP release
  • although upgrading XCP Firmware from CLI is the preferred method, it's possible to upgrade from the BUI : Menu / Utilities / Firmware Update.

Before starting the firmware update procedure, obtain the latest XCP firmware by downloading the appropriate patch to a location that is network-connected with the XSCF unit.  At the time of writing this document, the latest version is  XCP1123:

Solution

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED: M8000 / M9000 Product Training/Experience

TASK COMPLEXITY: 2

TIME ESTIMATE: 60 minutes (excluding possible all domain stop/start )

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? : n/a

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

The XCP firmware procedure exclusively runs on the active XSCF unit:

1. updating firmware requires a user with either platadm or fieldeng privileges, run the showuser command to confirm having appropriate privileges

2. run getflashimage, to import the new XCP firmware onto the main XSCF unit, example: getflashimage -u <username> ftp://<hostname or IP address>/<directory>/DCXCP1123.tar.gz

3. to confirm the XCP firmware image download was successful, run getflashimage -l

4. to check if firmware can be updated with domains running, run flashupdate -c check -m xcp -s 1123

5. to actually update the firmware, run flashupdate -c update -m xcp -s 1123

6. wait until the XSCF serial port or showlogs monitor output indicates the update has completed:  Aug  3 07:25:48 Mx000_1-1-0 monitor_msg: SCF:XCP update has been completed (XCP version=1123)

7. To determine is all domains need to be stopped and started (using XSCF poweroff and poweron command), you can check the information in Sun SPARC[TM] Enterprise M3000, M4000, M5000, M8000, M9000 XSCF Control Package (XCP) Firmware Image Software Version Matrix Information (Doc ID 1002631.1):

  • compare the values listed for Openboot Prom in column 2 , and the values for POST and OBP in column 3, for the XCP version currently used, and the XCP version that will be installed
  • if the 3 values are identical for both the currently used and the new XCP firmware, an all domain stop/start is not necessary
  • in any other case, all domains need to be stopped and started, to start using the new Openboot, POST and OBP software

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:

If domains need to stopped, make sure all domains successfully get started
