Information in this document applies to any platform.

Goal

The FS1-2 System reports messages related to internal components in different layers. This could create confusion while reading logs, as different address notation has been used in different layers. This document will give brief information about device mapping, and about address notation details for NVDIMM addresses in different layers .

Solution

The FS1-2 Controller has two memory models, named Base and Performance.

  • The Base model is configured with 32 GB DDR3 plus 8 GB DDR3 NVDIMMs (2 NVDIMMs , 2 ESMs).
  • The Performance model is configured with 192 GB DDR3 plus 16 GB NVDIMM (4 NVDIMMs , 4 ESMs).

The DIMM locations and address details are shown in the picture below for the Performance model.

Here are the DIMM slot numbering conventions used by various pieces of software. (NVDIMMs are on the P1 side, channel 2 and channel 3, left most DIMM slots.)

  • Row1: Notation used on the Controller motherboard silkscreen.
  • Row2: Notation used by the NVDIMM BIOS, seen in EEL logs and nvdtool, i.e. NVDIMM12,13,14,15.
  • Row3: Notation used to define the DIMM slot by processor (CPU) and channel, i.e. NVDIMMs at P1 Ch2 D0, P1 Ch2 D1, P1 Ch3 D0, P1 Ch3 D1.
  • Row4: Notation used by ILOM (SP) in the fmadm faulty (P1 or P0), i.e.NVDIMMs at P1/D0, P1/D1, P1/D2,P1/D3.
  • Row5: Notation used by ILOM (SP) when the processor number is not used to identify the DIMM slot, i.e. NVDIMMs at D8,D9,D10,D11. This is the notation used by the messages file.

Display internal components of a Controller by selecting Actions -> View while on the page System -> Controller. This GUI view also uses “CPU x slot y” terminology, with mappings the same as rows 3 and 4.

There are four NVDIMMs and four ESMs in the Performance model:

  • NVDIMM12 connected to ESM0
  • NVDIMM13 connected to ESM2
  • NVDIMM14 connected to ESM1
  • NVDIMM15 connected to ESM3

There are two NVDIMMs and two ESMs in the Base model:

  • NVDIMM14 connected to ESM1
  • NVDIMM15 connected to ESM3

The Netra Server X3-2 8 HDD chassis configuration is used as the base for the FS1-2 Controller. The ESM modules are located in the left side HDD slots HDD0, HDD1, HDD4 and HDD5. The ESM locations, when facing the front of the Controller chassis, are ESM0 and ESM1 bottom from left to right, and ESM2 and ESM3 top from left to right. The FS1-2 Performance model uses all 4 ESMs; the FS1-2 Base model uses only ESM1 and ESM3. Here is the picture showing the locations of the ESM modules in the front view of the Controller:
