StorageTek SL150 Modular Tape Library - Version All Versions to All Versions [Release All Releases]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Goal

How to update the tape drive firmware via WEB BUI.

Solution

This is applicable only from SL150 library code versions 2.00 and above.

The tape drive firmware can be updated via BUI through the library Ethernet interface. This makes the drive firmware update really easy for the customers. To obtain the drive firmware please reference the attached documents.

Multiplie drives, that are the same type, can be updated at the same time.

1. Login to the Web BUI as Admin.
2. Click on the ’Firmware’ tab on the left hand side.

There should be two tabs displayed after clicking on 'Firmware' on the left hand side: Library Firmware and Drive Firmware.  You should be able to click on the 'Drive Firmware' tab and see the drives in your library.

3. Click on the ’Update Drive Firmware’ button at the top of the listed drives.
4. Select the drive type from the drop down menu.
5. It will then populate a list of available drives. Choose one and click next.  Note: You can also choose multiple drives that are same type, and it will update them all at once.
6. Browse for the firmware file downloaded and extracted on your PC.  Remember to use the .E version of the firmware file. If the .FRM version is chosen, the upgrade will fail.
7. Then click Upgrade.
8. The drive and library will go into a warning state.
9. After several minutes, the upgrade completes and everything is back green.

See further information from the attached document.

Notes:

1. While an upgrade is in progress, the library will reject all robotics commands, whether from BUI or from the host.
2. Upgrading an HP LTO drive takes 5-6 minutes per drive.  Upgrading 20 drives will take approximately 2 hours, which is acceptable for many users.
3. Upgrading an IBM LTO drive takes considerably longer, ~20 minutes per drive, which adds up to almost 7 hours for 20 drives, therefore using SL150 BUI for the upgrade is not recommended.
