How to Replace a Fan Module in an Oracle FS1-2 Controller

Solution

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS

- WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED:

Product knowledge, FS1-2 Flash Storage System

TIME ESTIMATE: 45 minutes

TASK COMPLEXITY: 0

FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:

PROBLEM OVERVIEW:

What: A Controller Cooling Fan in an FS1-2 has failed and needs to be replaced.

Where: There will be a System ALert that identifies the Fan location.  There are two types of Fans in the FS1-2 Controller, each of the two Power Supplies contains a Fan as well as there being five  Fan Modules for the System Board.

Fan 0 = Power Supply 0*

Fan 1 = Power Supply 1*

Fan 2,3 = Fan Module 0 (left most)

Fan 4,5 = Fan Module 1 (left center)

Fan 6,7 = Fan Module 2 (center)

Fan 8,9 = Fan Module 3 (right center)

Fan 10,11 = Fan Module 4 (right most)

* Fan replacement for Controller Power Supplies are  covered in <Document ID 1946571.1>.

Why: A Power Supply Cooling Fan and/or the System Board Cooling Fan has failed.

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?

The Controller with the Fan problem will have a warning status.  The other Controller must have a normal status as this procedure requires a Controller failover so that the problem Controller can be powered off in order to replace the failed Fan.

NOTE: Please review the Knowledge <Document 1942676.1> FS System: How to Disable Call Home to Prevent Automatic Service Request ASR Generation before proceeding with the procedure below. The steps contained therein are provided to allow an Administrator to de-activate a particular ASR enabled array while performing maintenance or troubleshooting. This will prevent any additional Service Requests from being created unnecessarily.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE:

    1. Disable Call-Home to prevent spurious alerts (see <Document 1942676.1> FS System: How to disable Call Home to prevent Automatic Service Request ASR Generation).
    2. Use ESD precautions.
    3. Log into Oracle FS System Manager to access Guided Maintenance:
      1. Select System tab
      2. In the navigation tree, expand Hardware and select Controllers
      3. In the main window, double click on the Controller with the failed Cooling Fan.
      4. In the pop-up Modify window, select the failed Cooling Fan and then click on Replace Component.
      5. Follow the steps in Guided Maintenance to identify and place the Controller offline.
      6. Deploy the anti-tip legs in the front of the rack.
      7. Slide the Controller into the service position.
      8. Unplug both power cords.
      9. Loosen the two captive screws in the rear of the Top Cover.
      10. Slide the Top Cover back and remove.
      11. Grasp the strap-handle of the failed Cooling Fan and tug upwards to remove.
      12. Install the replacement Cooling Fan.
      13. Close the Top Cover being certain to catch the mushroom tabs in the front to secure it.  Failure to do so will inhibit the Controller being slid back into the rack.
      14. Tighten the two screws in the rear.
      15. Plug in both power cords.
      16. Return the Controller to the rack position.
      17. Return the anti-tip legs to their normal position.
    4. When finished, re-enable Call-Home.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:

Confirm that the replacement Cooling Fan was successful - the System Alert associated with it should be gone and the FS1-2 should be normal/green.

Note: Because the Controller must cold start, it may take as long as 15 minutes for the boot process to complete and the Controller to return to a normal status.
