Goal

One Step guide for Remote Support Engineers and Field Engineers when they are asked to do multiple layer upgrade of the Appliance Software.

Solution

NOTE: To prevent any 'spurious' ASRs being generated during the upgrade procedure, you may consider disabling 'ASR/Phone Home' on the appliance,
or deactivating ASR for the asset via My Oracle Support (See Doc ID 1508403.1)

NOTE: When upgrading from Appliance Firmware Release OS8.6.x (2013.1.6.0) or later, a reboot/takeover prior to node upgrade is not required.

  1. Ensure that all the required code versions are staged onto both heads using the BUI.
  2. Reboot Node A to make it passive    ## Note: When access to both heads is available, rebooting Node A is better than using takeover on Node B. ##
  3. Upgrade the (first step) Appliance Firmware Release on Node A
  4. Monitor Node A rejoining the cluster
  5. Reboot Node B, which will cause Node A to takeover (using takeover on Node A can have unwanted side effects)
  6. Ensure Node A completes all firmware upgrades to disks, ESM, IOMs, etc  (In the CLI, monitor "maintenance system updates show"  ... and wait)
  7. Upgrade the (first step) Appliance Firmware Release on Node B
  8. Monitor Node B rejoining the cluster
  9. Upgrade Node B to the 'next step' Appliance Firmware Release
  10. Monitor Node B rejoining the cluster
  11. Reboot Node A, which will cause Node B to takeover (only use takeover when you cannot access the other head)
  12. Ensure Node B completes all firmware upgrades to disks, ESM, IOMs, etc  (In the CLI, monitor "maintenance system updates show"  ... and wait)
  13. Upgrade Node A to the 'next step' Appliance Firmware Release
  14. Monitor Node A rejoining the cluster
  15. If everything is working as desired, apply deferred updates on the Active head, which will update the pools versions
  16. Failback, if necessary
  17. Note: If you forget to apply the deferred updates before going to active/active, you will need to apply them on both heads
