Goal

This document shows how to upgrade firmware on Sun Storage 2500, 2500-M2, 6000 Arrays, J4000 JBODs, and F5100 Flash Arrays using Sun Storage Common Array Manager (CAM) within the same top level firmware (from 06.xx to 06.xx or from 07.xx to 07.xx).

For information on upgrading firmware from 06.xx to 07.xx, please refer to the following:

  • <Document 1131593.1> Procedure to Upgrade the Sun StorageTek[TM] 6540 Array, 6140 Array or FLX380 Storage Array from Firmware 06.xx to 07.xx

  • <Document 1319254.1> Procedure to Upgrade the Sun StorageTek[TM] 2500 Series Array Controller Firmware from 06.xx to 07.xx

Solution

The array firmware is bundled with CAM software. Installing CAM places files for firmware updates in a directory on the management host. Each version of CAM has a baseline for firmware representing the most recently available versions at the time of release of that version of CAM.

The array firmware includes firmware for controllers, IOMs, and disks. When a firmware upgrade is invoked, CAM analyzes the firmware installed on the array. If the baseline firmware on the CAM management host is newer than what is running on the array, CAM will update the firmware to baseline.

NOTE: Firmware upgrades to the J4000, F5100, and Sun Blade 6000 Blade families (SAS I/O modules and disks) require an offline upgrade; therefore stop all I/O activity to the array.

Upgrades to disk firmware on the Sun Storage 2500, 2500-M2, and 6000 arrays also require that all disk I/O be stopped.

Prerequisite:

  1. Install the latest CAM on the CAM management host.

  2. Check the release notes for any release-specific upgrade requirements.

  3. Verify the array is not in a degraded state.

If it is degraded, the firmware upgrade attempt might fail and damage the array. Resolve the critical alarms before continuing the upgrade. If the array is degraded only because it is not at the baseline, the upgrade can be performed.

  4. Resolve any alarms.

Alarms can be checked in the Oracle Java Web Console masthead or in the Alarms Summary link in the Navigation Tree on the left. Use Service Advisor to address any alarms.

  5. F5100:  If you are upgrading firmware for the F5100, determine the master expander location before you begin the upgrade.

    a. Go to Storage Summary > F5100 > FRUs.

The Health Details for the selected F5100 chassis lists the location, name, status, and host information for each F5100 expander.

    b. Note the location of the master expander listed for “Chassis Master Expander Location.”

Steps for upgrading firmware using the CAM BUI

  1. Click Sun Storage Common Array Manager. The navigation pane and the Storage System Summary page are displayed.

    Select Array

  2. Select the check box to the left of the array for which the firmware needs to be upgraded. This enables the Install Firmware Baseline button.

You can only upgrade one array in the J4000, F5100, and Sun Blade 6000 Array Families at a time.

  3. Click Install Firmware Baseline.

CAM launches the Analyze and Install Array Firmware Baseline wizard.

Steps for upgrading firmware using SSCS, the CAM CLI

 SSCS Command Locations

  Windows     C:\Program Files\Sun\Common Array Manager\Component\sscs or C:\Program Files (x86)\Sun\Common Array Manager\Component\sscs
  Solaris          /opt/SUNWsesscs/cli/bin/sscs
  Linux          /opt/sun/cam/private/cli/bin/sscs
  1. Find the array name
# ./sscs list array

     2.  Verify the summary information on all alarms for the device

 # ./sscs list -f <array name> alarm

     3. Verify the firmware level before starting the upgrade

# ./sscs list -a <array name> firmware

    4. Start the upgrade process

  • To bring the array firmware to baseline, excluding disks
# ./sscs modify -a <array name> -f firmware
  • To bring array firmware to baseline, including disks, STOP ALL I/O FIRST.
# ./sscs modify -a <array name> -o -f firmware
