Solution

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED?:

Product knowledge, FS1-2 Flash Storage System

  TIME ESTIMATE: 30 minutes

  TASK COMPLEXITY: 0

FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:

  PROBLEM OVERVIEW:

WHAT: A Drive Enclosure Hard Disk Drive (HDD) or Solid State Drive (SSD) in an FS1-2 has failed and needs to be replaced

WHERE: FS1-2 Drive Enclosure location and Drive slot location should be in event log

    WHY: The Drive has failed.

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:

All Drive Enclosure configurations include a Hot Spare drive which will take the place of the failed drive.  If the FS1-2 is conducting a copy-away from a drive it suspects will fail soon, please wait until that process is completed before replacement.

NOTE: If the FS1-2 has a failed HDD and is running software below R6.1.18, please see Document 2051245.1 FS1-2 Drive Failures May Result in Data Loss if Controllers Warm Start or Boot During Rebuild or Copyback for additional instructions.

NOTE: The DE2-24C uses only 3.5" SAS drives and DE2-24P uses either SAS 2.5" or SSD 2.5" Drives

NOTE: Please use KM Document 1684888.1 How to Change the Mounting Bracket of a 1.6TB SSD Drive in an FS1-2 Drive Enclosure if the failed drive is an SSD with a capacity of 1.6TB.

NOTE: Please review the Knowledge Document 1942676.1 FS System: How to Disable Call Home to Prevent Automatic Service Request ASR Generation before proceeding with the procedure below. The steps contained therein are provided to allow an Administrator to de-activate a particular ASR enabled array while performing maintenance or troubleshooting. This will prevent any additional Service Requests from being created unnecessarily.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE?:

  1. Disable Call-Home to prevent spurious alerts (see Document 1942676.1 FS System: How to disable Call Home to prevent Automatic Service Request ASR Generation).
  2. Use ESD precautions
  3. Log into Oracle FS System Manager to access Guided Maintenance:
    1. Select System tab.
    2. In the navigation tree, expand Hardware and select Drive Enclosures
    3. In the main window, double click on the Drive Enclosure with failed HDD or SSD.
    4. In the pop-up Modify window, select the failed HDD or SSD and then Replace Component button.
    5. Follow the steps in Guided Maintenance to identify and replace the failed drive.
NOTE:  if, after drive replacement, a pop up window with the message "The Allocation Manager cannot find enough storage space to create or modify the volume capacity", you will need to change the location of the Primary Drive Group.  See the Oracle Flash Storage System Administrator's Guide for details on how to make a Drive Group the Primary Drive Group.

  4. When finished, re-enable Call-Home.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE?:

Confirm that replacement SSD is the new floating spare drive or that the HDD starts a copyback (HDDs have a "rotating" spare where "spare" rotates to the next HDD for each stripe).
