Goal

Provide specific additional steps required to successfully replace a HDD on Big Data Appliance

Purpose

This note directs to the corresponding MOS doc with steps to take before and after the disk is replaced.

Scope

The note applies to all nodes in all versions of BDA unless otherwise noted.  This doc applies to both hard and predictive failed disks.

Solution

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
- WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:  The engineer must be Big Data Appliance trained.
- TIME ESTIMATE: 60 Minutes
- TASK COMPLEXITY: 2

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS:
- PROBLEM OVERVIEW

This note directs to the corresponding MOS documentation required for successfully replace a hard disk drive in all versions of BDA

- WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?

The disk replacement process on BDA differs depending on several factors:
1. the version of BDA software being used,
2. the location of the disk being replaced,
3. the function of the disk, and
4. if the disk has failed critically or if it is in predictive failing status,

Determine the version of BDA and use the version specific MOS docs that is located in the Reference Section below to determine the steps needed before and after the HDD has been replaced..

HDDs are replaced with the node online, however if the node needs to be powered down, see Steps to Gracefully Shutdown and Power on a Single Node on Oracle Big Data Appliance Prior to Maintenance (Doc ID 2099858.1)

Note: The blue Ready to Remove LED does not turn on for BDA (as it does for other Engineered Systems).

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
- WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:

The system administration tasks required to take before and after the replacement drive are documented in the corresponding MOS doc listed in the Reference Section.
