Goal

Explain why prtdiag shows 1GB less of the total memory size after xir reset.

Prtdiag shows 260352 Megabytes of total memory size.

Once you send an xir reset to a PPAR from the XSCF, prtdiag shows 1GB less of the total memory size.

Solution

Hypervisor may abort because of a hardware failure or software error. If Hypervisor aborts, Hypervisor  information is saved as a dump file. This is called the Hypervisor dump (hvdump) function.

The Hypervisor dump is also collected when you send an xir reset to a PPAR, the hvdump is generated and result in about 1GB less of total memory size. This is because a memory space is used to save a Hypervisor dump and then a hvdump file (hvdump.x.gz, "x"= An integer from 0 to 7 is automatically assigned) is generated to a disk space (/var/opt/SUNWldm directory) once OS booting. So this is an expected behavior.

For more details about the hvdump settings,  please refer to the Fujitsu M10/SPARC M10 Systems System Operation and Administration Guide, chapter 8.12 Collecting a Hypervisor Dump File and 10.15 Resetting a Physical Partition for reference.
