Goal

Do I need to enroll / re-enroll a tape drive that replaced a broken encrypted drive?

Solution

The drive agent enrollment information is stored in the ethernet adapter card (i.e., dione or belisarius) and not in the drive.
Some drive models have external adapter cards. Some have adapter cards built internal to the drive.

When the adapter card is replaced, the drive needs to be re-enrolled.

Replacing a drive may not always require re-enrollment. If the drive's adapter card is external, and the drive is replaced, there is no need to re-enroll the agent.

HP LTO4 and all IBM LTO4/5/6/7 drives contain external adapter cards. So if any of these drives is replaced, no re-enrollment is needed.

If the adapter card is built internal to the drive (i.e., HP LTO5, HP LTO6 and HP LTO7) and the drive is replaced, the agent must be re-enrolled.
