FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: A Sun Server X4-4 Motherboard needs replacement

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

Shut down system and Power down the server.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

1. Positioning the Server for Maintenance

2. Removing the Server Top Cover

3. Remove the SP Card.

Caution - Removing the top cover without properly powering down the server and disconnecting the AC power cords from the power supplies will result in a chassis intrusion switch failure. This failure causes the server to be immediately powered off.

4. Remove the Motherboard

  •  Remove all PCIe cards from the server taking care to note their slot assignments.
  •  Remove the air baffle taking care not to damage the fan board ribbon cable if this is a 2 CPU configuration.
    • [Caution -the fan board ribbon cable can be damaged if baffle is lifted straight up.]
  •  Remove all memory riser cards.
  •  Disconnect the fan board ribbon cable from the motherboard.
  •  Remove CPUs and heatsinks from the motherboard.
  •  Loosen the green captive screw that secures the motherboard to the chassis. [Left corner of MB behind FM3]
  •  Disconnect all cables that connect the power supply backplane, disk drive backplane, and fand board to the motherboard.
  •  Remove the air devider by lifting it out of the chassis.
  •  Remove the four bus bar screws securing the motherboard to the power supply backplane.
  •  Remove all PCIe cards from the server.
  •  Remove the power supply cover plate that secures the SAS cables.
  •  Position the cables off to the side, using the tab on the power supply cover.
  •  Grasp the handle on the motherboard and slide it toward the front and then out of the chassis.
    • Note - If the locator indicator light pipe extension detaches during removal, ensure you retrieve it from the server.

5. Install the Motherboard and replace all removed components and cables in reverse order.

6. Return the server to operation by replacing the top cover, returning to the normal rack position and reconnecting the power cords to power supplies.

7. Power On the Server

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:

Boot up the server. Monitor and check the messages file under usual load by the server to check
CPU temperatures are normal. Use fmadm/fmdump to check for any faults and clear the ILOM/FMA logs if any old faults relating to the old motherboard unit assembly are found. Refer to the ILOM Supplement for the Sun Fire X4-4 Server (at ) for instructions on clearing faults.

Connect to the ILOM BUI and eventually clear any remaining faulty components (if, of course, they belong to the motherboard unit assembly).

NOTE: Motherboard replacement can lead to to a serial number of '00000000' which will break ASR if the motherboard is not reprogrammed after replacement.

In order to reprogram the serial number you will first need access into 'Service Mode' and this requires a long password which is obtained from our TSC backline. This 'Escalation' password is needed to reprogram the serial number of the system board.

An Escalation password (similar to service password) is valid for 48 hours, and is provided by our TSC backline. The following information is needed in order for the TSC backline to generate your temporary password granting access to Service Mode in order to reprogram the serial number.
You will initially need to provide the following information:

a. ILOM Version? (see "version" output)
b. Serial Number? (-> show /SYS [ or /CH ] product_serial_number )
c. When you will be onsite? (How soon do you need this escalation password?)

Please refer to document "How to update product serial number on systems which implement Top Level Identifier functionality" (Doc ID 1280913.1) for additional scope on reprogramming the serial number of the motherboard.
