GoalHow to Replace a Sun Server X4-4 Power Supply. SolutionDISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED: TIME ESTIMATE: 30 minutes TASK COMPLEXITY: 0 FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS: PROBLEM OVERVIEW: A Sun Server X4-4 Power Supply needs replacement WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? : Animation videos are available to demonstrate the power supply replacement process for these servers. please refer to the following links: Sun Server X4-4 Service Animations MP4 and HTML versions The server's redundant power supplies support concurrent maintenance, which enables you to remove and replace a power supply without shutting down the server, provided that the other power supply is online and working. WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE: 1.Confirm the Power Supply failure and it's location. a. Confirm which Power Supply is to be replaced. When looking at the server from the rear PS0 is to the left and PS1 is to the right. 2. Remove the Power Supply a. Gain access to the rear of the server where the faulty power supply is located. 3. Install the replacement Power Supply a. Remove the replacement power supply from its packaging and place it on an antistatic mat. 4.Return the Server to operation a. If you pulled the server out of the rack to make it easier to remove the power supply, push the server into the rack until the slide-rail locks (on the front of the server) engage the slide-rail assemblies. 5. Check and set the system serial number/fruid data if needed. a. login to the ILOM as root and then enter the restricted shell to check the psnc values. Follow the example below to enter restricted shell and use the showpsnc command- -> set SESSION mode=restricted WARNING: The "Restricted Shell" account is provided solely [(restricted_shell) sunx4-4-sp:~]$showpsnc Element | Primary | Backup1 | Backup2 b. With a power supply replacement the system should be able to automatically copy the psnc values from the primary and backup1 containers as long as they match. If the power supply in slot 0 has been replaced in a "hot-swap" process (ie. the PSU was replaced while the system is up and running) then the ILOM should be reset so that the system is prompted to check the TLI data containers and the psnc values can be copied over to the new supply. (if more than one part was replaced at the same time the automatic copying of psnc data may not happen so replacing multiple frus containing TLI data simultaneously should not be done). c. As long as all of the psnc values match and are correct as in the above example this step is done. However if there was an issue during the replacement which caused the psnc values not to propagate automatically the system may need to be prompted to copy the data by either resetting the ILOM or scheduling a power cycle of the system by shutting down and removing the AC. If the SP reset or power cycle of the system does not synchronize the TLI data this will need to be fixed manually from service or escalation mode. These ILOM modes require a dynamic password and an Oracle Engineer for access. If Service mode is needed please contact the TSC and request assistance. d.For Field Engineers: As long as all of the psnc values match and are correct as in the above example this step is done. However if there was an issue during the replacement which caused the psnc values not to propagate automatically then this will need to be fixed manually by using the copypsnc command from service or escalation mode. If you are unfamiliar with this process and require assistance please reference the steps for using copypsnc to fix the serial number detailed in the "How to Replace a Sun Server X4-4 Storage Disk Backplane (Doc ID xxxxxxx)" and contact the TSC if needed.[This section is not visible to customers.] OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE: N/A REFERENCE INFORMATION: Link to Documentation Attachments This solution has no attachment |
