How to Replace a Sun Server X4-2 Coin Cell Battery.

No special skills required, Customer Replaceable Unit (CRU) procedure

TIME ESTIMATE: 30 minutes

FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: A Sun Server X4-2 Coin Cell Battery needs replacement

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

If the system is still up and functioning, customer should perform an orderly and graceful shutdown of applications and OS.  Then power off the server and remove the AC power cords from the system.

A data backup is not a prerequisite but is a wise precaution.

Note: If this server is part of an Exadata, please follow shutdown instructions in Section 1 of DOC ID: 1539451.1


WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

1. Prepare the server for service.

  1. Power off the server and disconnect the power cords from the power supplies.
  2. Extend the server to the maintenance position in the rack.
  3. Attach an anti-static wrist strap.
  4. Remove the top cover.

2. Locate and Remove the Battery.

  1. The system battery is a 3V Lithium Coin Cell Battery (CR2032 or BR2032) which is located on the system board directly behind Processor 0.
  2. To remove the battery from the retainer, place your finger under the side of the battery nearest the rear of the server and gently lift the battery up and out of the retainer.

3. Install the Replacement Battery.

  1. Unpackage the replacement battery.
  2. Press the new battery into the battery retainer with the positive side (+) facing up.

4. Return the Server to operation

  1. Replace the top cover
  2. Remove any anti-static measures that were used.
  3. Return the server to it's normal operating position within the rack.
  4. Re-install the AC power cords and any data cables that were removed.
  5. Power on server.

5. Adjust system clocks if needed

  1. If the ILOM is not configured to use ntp adjust the time by logging into the ILOM cli and setting the clock using the following command format
    -> set /SP/clock datetime=MMDDhhmmYYYY
  2. When powering on the host for the first time adjust the system date/time by pressing F2 to go into the BIOS setup. The date and time can be adjusted in the "Main" menu section. After setting the time correctly navigate to the "Save&Exit" section and select the "Save Changes and Reset" option. 

 

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:

Boot up system and verify full functionality
