Goal

Tracking Serial Number of Drive Trays Now Available in SL8500 and SL3000.

Solution

Starting in SL8500 FRS-8.31 and SL3000 FRS_4.0 code, you can manually enter the tray serial numbers (not the DMOD number) into the library SLConsole display. This will be useful for opening service requests for the correct asset, StorageTek Analytics, and inventory tracking.  It was also recently enabled for the SL500.  The SLConsole needs to be at the minimum level that supports the code running in the library. SLC_6.51 or greater is recommended; minimum level required for SL8500 FRS_8.31 is SLC_6.25 and minimum level required for SL3000 FRS_4.0 is SLC_6.0.

Select the "Configuration" screen in the "Tools" menu and then select the "Drive Tray S/N" tab.  The serial number that you enter from the drive tray is associated with the drive Bay.  If a drive is swapped the tray number stays with the Bay.   This causes the controller to issue a warning that that the DMOD serial number associated with the tray serial number has changed.  The tray serial numbers are tracked in the library controller, not the SLConsole.  SLConsole only provides the method of displaying and editing the values.

The new 18 character drive tray serial number format is supported at SL3000 code 4.31 & SLC_6.51 or greater and the SL8500 support is scheduled for 8.50 & SLC_6.60 or greater which is tentatively scheduled for 10/6/2015.
