FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: A Sun Server X4-4 Fan Module needs replacement

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

This CRU does NOT require a power off of the system, nor telling any OS that you are replacing the component.

This section describes how to remove and install fan modules.

About Server Fans

The six fan modules are located at the front of the chassis; you can access them without removing the server cover.

Caution - While the fan modules do provide some cooling redundancy, if a fan module fails, replace it as soon as possible to maintain server availability. When you remove one of the fans in the back row, you must replace it within 30 seconds to prevent overheating of the server.
Fan Module LED Reference

For a server with a fan module fault, the amber fault and the FAN TOP indicators are on steady. The green OK indicator and the green SP indicator are on steady.

See 1.2 Server Front Panel Features and 1.3 Server Back Panel Features for locations of system LEDs.

The following LEDs are lit when a fan module fault is detected:

Front and rear Service Action Required LEDs

Fan Module Service Action Required (TOP) LED on the front of the server

Fan Module Service Action Required LED on or adjacent to the faulty fan module

The system Overtemp LED might light if a fan fault causes an increase in system operating temperature.

Removing and Installing Fan Modules

Caution - If you remove one of the fans in the back row, replace it within 30 seconds to prevent overheating of the server.

Use the following procedures to remove and install fan modules from the server.
Remove a Fan Module

Fan modules provide server cooling to the motherboard and its components. The fan modules are arranged in stacked pairs (a front row and a back row) to provide redundancy. If you remove a fan module from the back row, replace it immediately.
Fan modules are hot-serviceable components. It is not necessary to power off the server or to remove the server cover to service a fan module. However, depending on rack configuration, it might be necessary to partially extend the server from the rack to access the fan modules. Steps for partially extending the server from the rack are included in this procedure.

Before You Begin

Prepare the server for service. See Prepare the Server for Hot Service.

To perform a cold-service procedure, see Prepare the Server for Cold Service.
If necessary, slide the server partially out from the rack.
Identify the faulty Fan Module using the Fan Module indicators.

The Service Action Required indicators are located on the fan module. A lit amber color Service Action Required indicator identifies a faulty component. For more information, see Fan Module Indicator Reference.

    1. Lift the green handle on the fan module and use it to pull the module straight up and out of the server.

Caution - Component damage. Excessive movement or rocking of the Fan Module during removal can cause damage to the internal connector on the Fan Module Board. When removing a fan module, do not rock it back and forth.

Install a Fan Module

1. Orient the fan module so the connector on the bottom of the module is aligned with the connector on the inside of the slot and all keying and labeling are correctly positioned.
2. The fan modules are keyed to ensure that they are installed in the correct orientation.

3. Slide the fan module into the slot until is stops.
4. Press downward on the top of the fan module at the Press Here to Latch label until the fan module is fully seated.
5. Verify that the green OK indicator is lit.
6. Verify that the Top Fan indicator and the Service Action Required indicator on the server front panel are not lit.

See Server Front Panel Features and Server Back Panel Features for locations of system indicators.
If necessary, return the server to the normal rack position.

Ensure the cables are free from binding and pinching. Slide the server into the rack until it locks into place.

If necessary, close the CMA. If you performed a cold-service procedure, power on the server.

Return the Server to the Normal Rack Position

This procedure describes how to return the server to the normal rack position in preparation for operation.

1. Release the slide rails from the fully extended position by pushing the release tabs on the side of each rail.

2. While pushing on the release tabs, slowly push the server into the rack.
3. Ensure that the cables do not get in the way.
4. Reconnect the cables to the back of the server.
5. If the cable management arm (CMA) is in the way, disconnect the left CMA release and swing the CMA open.
6. Reconnect the CMA.
7. Swing the CMA closed and latch it to the left rack rail.
