How to Remove and Replace a 280R FC-AL Backplane
Solution
DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED?:
Field training in Sun Fire 280R Server
TIME ESTIMATE: 45 min
TASK COMPLEXITY: 3
FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:
PROBLEM OVERVIEW:
Faulty FC-AL Backplane
WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?:
System will have to be powered off for replacement of system board. If system is still able to run an operating environment, have customer perform graceful shutdown then power off system. Though not required a full backup is a good idea.
WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE?:
Follow ESD protection procedures. Locate a flat sturdy clean surface to set up an ESD mat with proper grounding.
Note:
Use max post only when searching for IO Controller issues, Fatal Resets, and Unrecoverable Errors(UEs) that Solaris is unable to properly diagnose. If diag-level is set to max at OBP, confirm with customer that if can be moved to the factory default of min.
See: Guidance for POST Diagnostic Level Setting on Sun Fire[TM] 280R, V480, V490, V880, V890 and V880z servers. (Doc ID

- Basic Field tool kit needed
- This procedure can be completed with system in a rack but it may be easier to remove system from rack.
- If possible have customer perform a graceful shutdown of O/S.
1. Power off system
2. Open and Remove Side Door
3. Remove all Disk Drives
Note:
You must remove all disk drives from the disk drive bay. Be sure to note the
disk slot number associated with each drive. Later, when you reinstall the disk
drives, it is important to return each drive to its original location.
4. Remove system from rack and locate it on ESD protected work area
5. Remove top cover
6. Disconnect the I/O power cable from the Fibre Channel-Arbitrated Loop (FC-AL)
backplane at J0101.
7. Disconnect the FC-AL data cable from the FC-AL backplane at J0102.
- Pull the cable out by its connector, not by the cable itself.
8. Disconnect the I2C cable from the FC-AL backplane at J0103.
9. Remove the two Phillips screws that secure the FC-AL backplane to the chassis.
10. Remove the backplane from the chassis.
- Place the backplane on an antistatic mat.
11. Position the FC-AL backplane in place behind the disk drive bay in the chassis.
- Insert the bottom tab on the backplane into the slot on the chassis.
12. Replace the two Phillips screws that secure the FC-AL backplane to the chassis.
13. Connect the FC-AL data cable from the main logic board at J0102 on the FC-AL
backplane.
- The connector is keyed to attach in only one way.
14. Connect the I/O power cable at J0101 on the FC-AL backplane.
- The connector is keyed to attach in only one way.
15. Connect the I2C cable at J0103 on the FC-AL backplane.
- The connector is keyed to attach in only one way.
16. Install all Disk Drives
17. Close Side Door
OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE TO
