Information in this document applies to any platform.

Goal

When connecting an Exalytics server to an Exadata server (via infiniband), do the OFA package versions need to match?

For example, if Exalytics server uses ofa-2.6.32-100.23.1.el5-1.5.2-4.0.47 and the Exadata server uses ofa-2.6.32-400.21.1.el5uek-1.5.1-4.0.58, will this cause any compatibility issue?

Solution

Exalytics Product Management does not recommend updating the ofa packages on Exalytics to the same version as the ofa packages on Exadata.

The ofa packages on Exalytics are considered a required/Exalytics unique package on the Exalytics server.
Oracle has had many customers connecting to Exadata from an Exalytics server and have not encountered any compatibility issues caused by differences in ofa packages.

Across the board, Oracle has various Engineered Systems with differing ofa, kernels and other packages. A certain level of fault tolerance is built in to allow the systems to communicate with one another.
Oracle engineered systems are "engineered to work together" and if there are any problems that may arise, Oracle Support can assist.
