Goal

The goal of this document is to explain HP-UX behavior when connected to an Axiom Storage System.

Solution

After LUN mapping is configured on an Axiom Storage System for a HP-UX host, the Axiom GUI shows the host HBA status as "Not Connected"

Axiom GUI manager hosts output
==========================
Host1_HBA0 50:06:0b:00:00:21:d7:d2 Not Connected
Host1_HBA1 50:06:0b:00:00:5f:ec:56  Not Connected

Based on WWNs they are originating from HP:

50060b000021d7d2 -> HP (Array / Tape)
50060b00005fec56  -> HP (Array / Tape)

To clarify status:

1- Double check the LUN mapping on axiom side.

2- Check and confirm whether the host can perform IO to a mapped LUN.

3- On HP-UX platforms, some HBA device drivers use a different approach—they log out from the connection when there is no traffic to send. A HP-UX HBA port often shows as Not Connected even though there is an enabled physical connection between the ports.

4- If there is a problem performing IO to this LUN, please check the LUN number used during host mapping. If there are SAN hosts accessing the LUNs using HP-UX initiator ports and HP HBAs, one can enable the HP-UX option. When this option is enabled, the system determines the LUN numbering to use using the HP-UX addressing scheme, allowing up to 255 LUNs.

NOTE: with the HP-UX option enabled, the host cannot use a visible LUN with ID 0

- Click on the Storage icon in the top context pane.
- Click on the Hosts link in the left navigation pane.
- Click on the name of a host and select "Modify Host Settings" from the Actions drop-down list.
- Make any necessary changes in the tabbed host settings pages and click OK.
