FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:

PROBLEM OVERVIEW:

Transcoding unit module is bad and needs to be replaced.

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

This operation should be performed during low-traffic periods or scheduled maintenance windows.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE?:

  1. Transcoding NIU Removal
    1. Attach an anti-static wrist strap
    2. Unscrew the two thumb screws located on each side of the Transcoding NIU card with a #2 Phillips screwdriver. The screws are spring-loaded and will be pushed forward, but will not fall out of the processing unit.
    3. Pull the two ejector handles out and away from the chassis at the same time to disengage the Transcoding NIU card from the midplane and chassis.
    4. Remove the Transcoding NIU card from the Acme Packet 3820/4500 chassis and move to an ESD safe location.
    5. The Transcoding NIU card is removed from the chassis and moved to an ESD safe location.
  2. Remove defective DSP Module from the Transcoding NIU card.
    1. The two white ejector handles of the DSP module are in the closed position.
    2. With you fingers and thumbs push the two white ejector handles out to the extended position.
    3. Remove DSP module
  3. Install the DSP Module's in the defective DSP module slot into the Transcoding NIU card
    1. The two white ejector handles are in the closed position.
    2. With your fingers and thumbs push the two white ejector handles out to the extended position.
    3. The two white ejector handles are in the extended position and ready for the DSP module to be inserted into the socket.
    4. The DSP module will only go into the socket if the keyed position is correct.
    5. Make sure the keyed position is correct on the DSP module and the socket, then insert the DSP module into the socket.
    6. Once the DSP module is inserted into the socket properly. Apply pressure evenly across the top of the DSP module until it is inserted into the socket.
    7. As you press down evenly across the top of the DSP module, the two white ejector handles will move up and lock the DSP module into the socket.
    8. The two white ejector handles and the DSP are locked into the correct position in the socket. Repeat these steps if you have to replace another DSP module.
  4. Install the Transcoding NIU card into the Acme Packet 4500 or 3820
    1. Insert the Transcoding NIU card into the chassis with both sides of the Transcoding NIU card inserted into the guide rails.
    2. Slide the Transcoding NIU card forward until it engages with the midplane and chassis.
    3. Move the ejector handles from the extended position to the forward position and into the chassis.
    4. With a #2 phillips head screw driver, screw in the two screws so the Transcoding NIU card is secured in the chassis.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE?:

Using the show prom-info phy command you can check if the DSP modules are recognized by the Acme Packet 4500. Make sure all the DSP modules you installed are present in the system.
