How to Remove and Replace a Sun Netra X3-2, ZS3-2 (Netra X4270M3) Internal USB Flash Drive

Solution

CAP PROBLEM OVERVIEW: Replace an Internal USB Flash Drive

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS

- WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED: Sun Netra Server X3-2 Server Hardware Training

- TIME ESTIMATE: 30 Minutes

- TASK COMPLEXITY: 1

Notes:

- The USB flash drive is a 4GB flash technology device that provides nonvolatile
storage of the OSA software application.

- The USB flash drive is located in the rear-most USB socket at the center rear
of the Motherboard, labeled "USB 0" .

– Do not use the USB drive for any purpose other than to support the OSA
software application.

- IMPORTANT: Make sure you visually observe the markings of the existing internal
USB flash drive PRIOR to removing it - as when you install the new one, you will
need to install the new one in the same manner (i.e., IT IS NOT KEYED).

- USB Drive LED
The status of the USB flash drive is represented by an LED located within the
construction of the USB drive, and might not have any distinct features. The
light emitted by the LED might be visible through the grille of the back panel
of the chassis, at the location of Riser 3.

The LED of the USB drive flashes to represent read/write activity:
Rapid flashing identifies read activity.
Slower, rhythmic flashing identifies write activity.

Preparing for Service:

If the system is still up and functioning, customer should perform an orderly and graceful
shutdown of applications and OS.  Then power off the server and remove the AC power cords
from the system.  Extend the server to the maintenance position in the rack.
Attach an anti-static wrist strap. Remove the top cover.

Removing the USB Drive:

Note: Removing the USB flash drive is a cold-service operation. You must power off
the server before you remove the USB flash drive.

1. Consider your first step.
If you have not prepared for service, do so now.
If you are removing the USB flash drive as part of another component’s
removal or installation procedure, go to Step 2.

2. If a PCIe3 card installed in Riser 2 prevents you from accessing the USB
drive, remove Riser 2.

3. Grasp the USB drive and pull it straight up and out of the chassis.

4. Set the USB drive aside.

5. Consider your next step.
If you removed the USB drive as part of a replacement operation, install a new
USB drive.
If you removed the USB drive as part of another component’s removal or
installation procedure, return to that procedure. Otherwise, go to Step 6.

6. If you removed Riser 2 to access the USB drive, install Riser 2.

7. Finish the removal procedure.

Install the USB Drive:

Installing the USB flash drive is a cold-service operation. You must power off the
server before installing the USB flash drive.

1. Consider your first step.
If you are replacing the USB flash drive, remove the faulty or obsolete USB
flash drive first, then return to this procedure, Step 2.
If you are installing the USB flash drive as part of another component’s removal
or installation procedure, go to Step 2.
If you are installing a new USB drive, perform these tasks in order to remove
components:
If a PCIe3 card installed in Riser 2 prevents you from accessing the USB port,
remove Riser 2.

2. Position the USB drive to where it installs onto the motherboard.
The USB drive installs into the USB socket that is toward the rear.
The socket is labeled "USB 0"  .

3. Gently insert the USB drive into the USB socket.

4. Consider your next step.
If you installed the USB drive as part of a replacement operation, go to Step 5.
If you installed the USB drive as part of another component’s removal or
installation procedure, return to that procedure.
If you installed a new USB drive, go to Step 5.

5. If you removed Riser 2 to access the USB drive, install Riser 2.

6. Finish the installation procedure.

Return the System to Service:

1. Replace the top cover.

2. Remove any anti-static measures that were used.

3. Return the server to it's normal operating position within the rack.

4. Re-install the AC power cords and any data cables that were removed.

5. Power on server. Verify that the Power/OK indicator led lights steady on.

6. Verify that the newly installed Internal USB Flash Drive is seen by the server and that
the system boots properly.

Flash the new Internal USB Drive (optional):

1. If you have replaced the Oracle System Assistant USB flash drive, you can restore
the Oracle System Assistant image onto the new USB device. For instructions, refer to the
"Restore Oracle System Assistant" section of the Netra Server X3-2 Administration Guide.
