How to Replace a PCIe Card, Riser 3 on a Sun Netra X3-2, ZFS ZS3-2 (Netra X4270M3)

Solution

CAP PROBLEM OVERVIEW: Replace a PCIe Card, Riser 3

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:
Sun Netra Server X3-2 Server Training.

Note: Each riser can accommodate two PCIe3 x8 cards:
■ Riser 1 contains slots 1 and 4.
■ Riser 2 contains slots 2 and 5.
■ Riser 3 contains slots 3 and 6.

By design, the risers are mechanically dependent upon each other. Even if there are no PCIe3 cards installed, all risers must be installed.

TIME ESTIMATE: 45 minutes

TASK COMPLEXITY: 3-FRU

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

If the system is still up and functioning, customer should perform an orderly and graceful shutdown of applications and OS.  Then power off the server and remove the AC power cords from the system.

A data backup is not a prerequisite but is a wise precaution.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

1. Prepare the server for service.

  1. Power off the server and disconnect the power cords from the power supplies.
  2. Extend the server to the maintenance position in the rack.
  3. Attach an anti-static wrist strap.
  4. Remove the top cover.

2. Determine which PCIe3 card to remove.

3. Disconnect any external cables attached to any PCIe3 cards installed in the riser.

4. Disconnect any internal cables attached to the PCIe3 cards that are accessable, if that will ease removing the PCIe3 card.

5. Fully loosen the two captive screws securing the riser to the motherboard.

6. Lift the riser straight up and out of its socket on the motherboard.

7. Disconnect any remaining internal cables attached to the PCIe3 cards installed in the riser.

8. Press the green tab and rotate the the retainer up and out of the riser bracket.

Continue to rotate the tab a full 180 degrees.

9. Lift the PCIe3 card off of the bracket alignment pin and out of the socket.

10. Move the PCIe3 card sideways out of the riser and lift the PCIe3 card away from the riser.

11. Set the PCIe3 card aside.

To install the new card in the riser

1. Move the PCIe3 card sideways into the riser, positioning the card to where it will install into the riser.

The PCIe3 card bracket mates with the alignment pin and the socket of the riser.

2. Press the PCIe3 card into the socket.

3. Swing the green retainer to its fully closed position.

If there is resistance, check the alignment of the PCIe3 card bracket and try again.

4. Install Riser 3.

5. Align the riser to the location where it installs into the chassis.

6. Reconnect any previously removed internal cables to any PCIe3 cards installed in the riser, if doing so will ease installation of the riser.

7. Lower the riser card onto the motherboard and press the card edge connector securely into the socket.

The bracket of the riser overlaps the bracket of the adjacent riser.

8. Tighten the two captive screws.

9. Reconnect any previously removed external cables to any PCIe3 cards installed in the riser.

10. Complete the following steps

  1. Replace the top cover
  2. Remove any anti-static measures that were used.
  3. Return the server to it's normal operating position within the rack.
  4. Re-install the AC power cords and any data cables that were removed.
  5. Power on server. Verify that the Power/OK indicator led lights steady on.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:

Boot up system and verify full functionality
