Solution

CAP PROBLEM OVERVIEW: Replace a Fan Module

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:
Sun Netra Server X3-2 Server Training.

Note: The status of each fan module is represented by a single bi-color LED. The LEDs are located on the motherboard near each fan module, and are visible from the rear panel, by looking through the grille below the risers.
The color of the status LED indicates:
■ Green – The fan module is functional without fault.
■ Amber – The fan module has experienced a fault.

Note – There are two LEDs near the status LED for fan module 3. Do not confuse the FPGA Good and FPGA Diagnostic LEDs with the status LED for fan module 3.

TIME ESTIMATE: 30 minutes

TASK COMPLEXITY: 3-FRU

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

If the system is still up and functioning, customer should perform an orderly and graceful shutdown of applications and OS.  Then power off the server and remove the AC power cords from the system.

A data backup is not a prerequisite but is a wise precaution.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

  1. Power off the server and disconnect the power cords from the power supplies.
  2. Extend the server to the maintenance position in the rack.
  3. Attach an anti-static wrist strap.
  4. Remove the top cover.

2. Determine which fan module to remove.

3. Grasp the green band of the fan module to be removed with your forefinger and press down on the fan module with your thumb.

4. Pull the band straight up and lift the fan module out of the chassis.

5. Set the fan module aside.

6. Repeat from Step 3 for any additional fan modules to be removed.

Install replacement fan modules

1. Align the fan module to the location where it installs into the fan tray.

The green band is on the top of the fan module and the arrow points to the rear of the chassis.

2. Lower the fan module into the fan tray.

3. Press the fan module down until it clicks securely in the fan tray.

4. Repeat from Step 1 through Step 3 for any additional fan modules that you are installing.

5. Complete the following steps:

  1. Replace the top cover
  2. Remove any anti-static measures that were used.
  3. Return the server to it's normal operating position within the rack.
  4. Re-install the AC power cords and any data cables that were removed.
  5. Power on server. Verify that the Power/OK indicator led lights steady on.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
