Goal

Auto Negotiation and Duplex Best Current Practice (BCP) settings.

Solution

Acme Packet recommends always keeping auto-negotiation enabled on the 3000, 4000, and 9000-series hardware.

Additional Details for specific hardware configurations:
The recommended settings for PHY cards (as configured in phy-interface config):

1) For PHY cards / Network Interface Units equipped with copper interfaces:

For copper cards auto-negotiation should be set to *enabled* and duplex and speed to Null (or blank). Auto Negotiation is a requirement of the latest 1000BASE-T specification (1000 Mbit speed over copper electrical), to determine the master-slave relationship and duplex capabilities. Setting auto-negotiation to disabled can have unintended consequences for 1000 speed ports. If a link cannot establish with auto-negotiation enabled, please verify that other equipment is also using auto-negotiation.

Only disable auto-negotiation on copper interfaces if the administrator has a good working knowledge of the switch's negotiation requirements, and only need 10 or 100 Mbit speeds. In this case, set 'auto-negotiation' to disabled, then manually set the duplex and speed in the phy-config. Check 'show prom-info phy' to verify the card supports 10 or 100 Mbit operation.

2) For PHY cards / NIUs equipped with Optical Fiber 1000BASE-X SFPs (1000BASE-SX MultiMode or 1000BASE-LX SingleMode) :

On 3000 and 4000-series equipped with fiber, Auto Negotiation should be enabled. If this parameter is disabled for some reason the link connects at 1000 / FULL DUPLEX . If a link cannot be established, check that both sides have auto-negotiation enabled or are set to 1000 / FULL.

3) 9000-series with SFP transceivers do not support disabling auto-negotiation. That config parameter is ignored, and the show interfaces shows the true state of auto-negotiation being enabled.
