DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED:
No special skills required, Customer Replaceable Unit (CRU) procedure
TIME ESTIMATE: 30 minutes
TASK COMPLEXITY: 0
FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:
PROBLEM OVERVIEW: A Sun Fire X4600, X4600 M2 Memory DIMM needs replacement
WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :
Complete and clean OS shutdown and power off is required.
WHAT ACTION DOES ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
Use Solaris FM commands such as:
# fmdump -v
# fmadm clear <UUID> if Solaris is the installed OS and if fmdump -v reports a faulty DIMM for the
date of fault reported by the Customer/Sun Support engineer.
Check Maintenance LED on the front panel of the server.
To use CPU module's built-in DIMM diagnostics, refer to "Locating Faulty CPUs and DIMMs" on the Service Guide.
Ensure that if system is mounted in a rack that the anti tip over bar at the bottom of the rack is fully extended before servicing commences.
Caution - The CPU module can be damaged if removed or inserted while standby power is on. Be sure to disable standby power by disconnecting all external power cables before proceeding.
A Memory DIMM Removal
A1 Power off server
A2 If server is rack-mounted, slide it far enough from rack to remove the main cover
If impossible to do previous step, consider unracking server completely
A3 Remove top cover
A4 Remove CPU module with faulty DIMM from its bay
A4 a. Rotate both plastic levers on top corners of module to upright, 90-degree position
A4 b. Lift module straight up to remove from metal edge-guides in bay
A4 c. Lay CPU module flat on back surface, on anti-static mat
A5 Locate DIMM slot on CPU module to which you will replace a DIMM
A6 To remove DIMM, follow steps below
A6 a. Rotate both DIMM slot ejectors outward as far as they will go
DIMM is partially ejected from the socket
A6 b. Carefully lift DIMM straight up to remove from socket
B MemoryDIMM Installation
B1 Ensure DIMM slot ejectors at each end of socket are fully open to accept new DIMM
B2 Align notch in bottom edge of DIMM w/ key in DIMM socket
B3 Make sure that DIMM slots are used according to correct rules for this CPU module
B4 Reinstall CPU module
B4 a. Ensure that both plastic levers on top corners of module are in fully open, vertical position. Please note that pins connecting CPU module to motherboard are very fragile. When you install module, be very careful to align module with edge-guides in bay and to rotate both plastic levers at top corners of module closed simultaneously to avoid jamming connector pins
B4 b. Align module edges with metal edge-guides in CPU module bay
B4 c. Lower module until it touches motherboard connector and opened plastic levers are in contact with edges of bay
B4 d. Rotate both plastic levers downward until flat against top corners of module
B5 Replace main cover
OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE
If time & customer allow, run extended POST after DIMM replacement.
WHAT ACTION DOES CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Reboot server.
Once OS is booted, make sure all installed memory is available.
Check messages.
# prtdiag -v |more => to state all memory installed and used in system
