Information in this document applies to any platform.

Goal

To describe when a session-agent goes out of service.

Solution

Ping-method under session-agent can be configured to OPTIONS or INFO and a ping-interval can be configured to periodically ping a session-agent to check if it is reachable or not. When there is no response after couple of re-transmissions (until trans-expire under sip-config expires), the agent is declared as out of service and status is changed to O (Shown in show sipd agents output). Any new requests destined to that IP address will be replied back with 503 by the SD.

When ping-method is not enabled, the default value for timeout is 5 consecutive non-ping transaction timeouts (when constraints are enabled under the session-agent) after which the agent is marked out of service. This behavior can be changed by configuring the option trans-timeouts=X under session-agent where X is the desired number of transaction timeouts. Please note that if constraints are not enabled, then a session-agent never goes out of service for non-ping transactions.
