Goal

How to Replace a Sun Server X4-2 DVD Drive.

Solution

WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED:
No special skills required, Customer Replaceable Unit (CRU) procedure

TIME ESTIMATE: 30 minutes

FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: A Sun Server X4-2 DVD Drive needs replacement

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

If the system is still up and functioning, customer should perform an orderly and graceful shutdown of applications and OS.  Then power off the server and remove the AC power cords from the system.

A data backup is not a prerequisite but is a wise precaution.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

1. Prepare the server for service.

  1. Remove any media from the DVD drive
  2. Power off the server and disconnect the power cords from the power supplies.
  3. Extend the server to the maintenance position in the rack.
  4. Attach an anti-static wrist strap.
  5. Remove the top cover.
  6. Open the Fan access door

2. Remove the DVD Drive

  1. Locate the DVD drive and disconnect the cable from the rear of the drive
  2. To disengage the DVD drive from the chassis, press and hold the release tab on the rear of the DVD drive up slightly. (the release tab is located on the rear of the drive towards the right side of the system chassis when facing the front of the system)
  3. Gently push the DVD drive forward and slide it out the front of the server
  4. Place the DVD Drive on an antistatic mat.

3. Install the replacement DVD Drive

  1. Remove the replacment DVD drive from it's anti-static bag and place on an anti-static mat.
  2. align the DVD drive with the drive opening at the front of the server.
  3. Push the replacement DVD drive into the chassis until the release tab on the rear of the drive engages the chassis with an audible click
  4. Reconnect the DVD drive cable on the rear of the drive

4.Return the Server to operation

  1. Replace the top cover
  2. Close the Fan access door
  3. Remove any anti-static measures that were used.
  4. Return the server to it's normal operating position within the rack.
  5. Re-install the AC power cords and any data cables that were removed.
  6. Power on server. Verify that the Power/OK indicator led lights steady on.
  7. Verify that the replacement DVD functions properly.

 

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:

Boot up system and verify full functionality
