How to Replace a Sun Server X4-2 Internal USB Flash Drive.

No special skills required, Customer Replaceable Unit (CRU) procedure

FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:

PROBLEM OVERVIEW: A Sun Server X4-2 Internal USB Flash Drive needs replacement

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

If the system is still up and functioning, customer should perform an orderly and graceful shutdown of applications and OS.  Then power off the server and remove the AC power cords from the system.

A data backup is not a prerequisite but is a wise precaution.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

1. Prepare the server for service.

  1. Power off the server and disconnect the power cords from the power supplies.
  2. Extend the server to the maintenance position in the rack.
  3. Attach an anti-static wrist strap.
  4. Remove the top cover.

2. Locate and Remove the Internal USB Flash Drive

  1. The Internal USB Flash Drive connectors are located on the system board directly behind the connector for Power Supply 1
  2. remove the small plastic cover located directly above the USB drive
  3. To remove a USB flash drive, grasp it and pull it out of the internal USB port
  4. Make sure to note the USB drive's location and orientation in the USB connector so that the replacement can be reinstalled in the same location
  5. Place the USB drive on an anti-static mat.

3. Install the replacement Internal USB Flash Drive

  1. Remove the replacment USB Flash Drive from it's packaging and place on an anti-static mat.
  2. Insert the USB flash drive into the internal USB port making sure to insert it into the same location and in the same orientation as the drive that was removed.
  3. Reinstall the small plastic cover over the USB drive location

4. Return the Server to operation

  1. Replace the top cover
  2. Remove any anti-static measures that were used.
  3. Return the server to it's normal operating position within the rack.
  4. Re-install the AC power cords and any data cables that were removed.
  5. Power on server. Verify that the Power/OK indicator led lights steady on.
  6. Verify that the newly installed Internal USB Flash Drive is seen by the server and that the system boots properly.
  7. If you have replaced the Oracle System Assistant USB flash drive, you can restore the Oracle System Assistant image onto the new USB device. OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:

Boot up system and verify full functionality
