Goal

How to configure the Session Director (SD) to use the rear console port.

Solution

There are 2 methods to configure the Session Director (SD) to use the rear console port: first (A) is shorter and usually more convenient but not applicable in all cases and second (B) is a bit longer but applicable in all cases.

- Method (A):
==========
The SD to be configured must first meet the following before any attempt to configure rear console access.

1. SD-II only
2. Boot-loader must be Jan 2005 or higher.
3. Software load 2.00 or higher.
4. Front console port access configured and in working condition.

To determine the information you can use the following commands:

ACME-SD# show version boot

Bootloader Info
---------------
Bootloader Date: 01/21/2005 08:17:07
Mainboard: SD-II
Processor: xxxxx
Serial Number: xxxxxxxxxxxx
Mainboard Rev: 1.32

ACME-SD# show version
ACME Firmware 2.0.0 P2
06/01/05

Once you determine that the SD meets the requirements, the following steps can be done. This process requires the SD to be rebooted. On an high availability (HA) system, please run the procedure first on the standby and fail it over when the system reboots and all sync flags have become true.

Procedure to change console port to rear access:

1. From a front console connection reboot SD.
2. Stop the auto-boot process by hitting the space bar when prompted.
3. At the acme packet boot prompt: type in P
4. Enter Y to change the port being used.
5. The change requires a reboot.
6. At the prompt type in @ to reboot the SD.

Once the SD starts to reboot, communication will be lost. Connect the SD's front console port to the rear console (console 2). Depending on how fast the cable is moved, there may be messages on the bootup. Hit enter to get a password prompt if the SD has completed the boot process.

To return to using the front console port, just follow the same process as above. Simultaneous console access to both is not possible.

Here is an example of the change:

Acme Packet Net-Net Session Director II

Initializing system memory........ done.

Press the space bar to stop auto-boot...

Enter Y to change the console port or anything else to abort: Y

The rear port will be used for the console when the system is rebooted

- Method (B):
==========
This method takes a bit more time, however it works in all cases.

Before starting this method, be sure to have:

- A working console access to active console port.
- A diags sw version appropriated for the SD
(usually included under /tffs0 directory of the SD)

(Tested with diags_118.gz for SD-I and diags_124.gz for SD-II)

Procedure is as follows:

1. From console connection, change bootparams file name to boot using diags version and reboot.
2. Log in to diags mode (password=flatspin) and enter diags Menu (dm)  NOTE: 4500/3800 would use 'dc' to access diags.
3. Choose "Diagnostic Utilities Menu" (10)
4. Choose "Set Console Port" ( (18) in diags_124.gz, (17) in diags_118.gz )
5. Then choose either (1) to set Front console or (2) to set Rear console
6. Confirm typing "Y"
7. Go back one menu (4)
8. Choose "Set Boot Parameters"( (21) or (20) depending of diags version)
9. Set boot image file name back to the sw version.
10. Exit from all Diag Menus and then type "reboot" in vxWorks prompt.

Once SD starts to boot, the console port change takes effect, so move
the cable to the other console port to continue access to SD via console.

An Example of the console port change including whole printouts is in the attached file.
