Goal

Using a Cisco Console cable to connect to the Session Director.

Solution

The Cisco Console pinout is not the same as that of the console on a Acme Packet Net-Net Session Director. Therefore, the Cisco Console cable, which is typical a baby blue RJ45 to DB9 cable, will not work straight out of the box.

However, the difference between the Cisco Console and the Acme Packet Net-Net Session-Director is transmit and receive. This could be over come with a DB9 NULL MODEM adapter. If you place a DB9 NULL MODEM adapter inline between the DB9 end of the Cisco Console and the serial port on the computer running the terminal emulation software, you should be able to connect.

Please keep in mind that the console port speed on the Acme Packet Net-Net Session Director is much higher than that of a default Cisco. Acme Packet uses a baud rate of 115,200 bps. Make sure you change the Acme Packet baud rate to 9600 and configure the Cisco router the same. At 115,200 the Cisco router will send garbage characters which can cause unintended consequences for the Acme Packet SBCs.

Please note Acme Packet ships each Net-Net SBC with a USB-RJ45 adapter which can be used with a straight through cable to establish a console connection.

If attempting to connect a SBC with the Acme-provided USB-RJ45 adapter to a Cisco terminal server, the cabling pinout would need to be the following:

Cisco          ACME
3 ------------- 6
4 ]____________ 4
5 ]
6 ------------- 3
