Goal

ZFS Storage Appliance: Offlining a (failed) disk before replacement is NOT SUPPORTED

Solution

The ZFSSA BUI/CLI offers the ability to offline a drive.

This option is only available for disks that are part of a configured storage pool (including the system pool).

Offlining a disk prevents the system from reading or writing to it.

Faulted devices are already avoided, so this option should only be required if a disk is exhibiting performance problems that do not result in pathological failure.

It is not possible to offline a disk that would prevent access to data (i.e. offlining both halves of a mirror).

From BUI

Maintenance--Hardware--Select DiskShelves/Show details              and offline the disk using "Offline disk" option

From CLI

CLI> maintenance hardware select <chassisID> select disk select <Disk number> set offline=true

Offlining the disk manually from BUI/CLI prior replacement before replacement is NOT SUPPORTED.

If you take a drive offline, replace the drive, and try to bring it online, it remains in the faulted state.

If the original faulted disk is sent back after replacement please engage Storage-TSC for assistance.

In case the disk was offlined by TSC/FE prior replacement for any reasons and replaced with a new  one and new disk is not detected,

The workaround a Field Engineer can do is :

  1. Insert back the original faulted disk which was offlined manually
  2. Online the same  from BUI/CLI
  3. Replace again with the new one

If the original faulted disk is sent back after replacement please contact TSC for  assistance

Even though BUI offers the ability to offline a drive it does not trigger activation of a spare in case a disk which is not faulted and actively participating in the pool is offlined.

RFE: 15566832: Request ability to offline a drive and activate a spare
