DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED:
Nothing beyond basic product training.

TIME ESTIMATE: 60 minutes

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS

PROBLEM OVERVIEW:
DIMM failure

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

A data backup is not a pre-requisite but is a wise precaution.
System needs to be shutdown by the customer.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

1. Power Off the Server.
2. Disconnect Cables From the Server.
3. Remove the Server From the Rack.
4. Perform Antistatic Measures.
5. Remove the Top Cover.

  • Press down on the cover release and, using the indent for leverage, slide the cover toward the rear of the chassis approximately 0.5 inch (12 mm).
  • Grasp the cover by its rear edge and lift it straight up from the chassis.

6. You will only need to slide the PCI tray back for this procedure.
7. Flip the DIMM/CPU duct open. DIMMs are located underneath.
8. Identify the DIMM to remove and press the ejector levers open, releasing the DIMM.

For the Netra X4200 M2 server, you can view the DIMM fault LEDs without the power cords attached. These LEDs can be lit by a capacitor on the motherboard for up to one minute. To light the DIMM fault LEDs, push the small button on
the motherboard labeled "DIMM SW2". To push the DIMM SW2 button, the PCI Tray must be removed and the button must be pushed through the hole in the PCI-E cable hold-down bracket.

Netra X4200 M2 DIMM Population Rules

  • Each pair of DIMMs must be identical (same manufacturer and capacity).
  • The DIMM slots are paired and the DIMMs must be installed in pairs (A1 and B1, A0 and B0). The memory sockets are colored black or white to indicate which slots are paired by matching colors.
  • CPUs with only a single pair of DIMMs must have those DIMMs installed in that CPU’s white DIMM slots (A1 and B1).

9. Set the DIMM aside on an antistatic mat.
10. Repeat steps 8 and 9 for all DIMMs to be removed.
11. Rotate both DIMM slot ejectors outward as far as they will go. The DIMM is partially ejected from the socket.
12. Carefully lift the DIMMs straight up to remove it from the socket.
13. Install the DIMMs.

  • Ensure that the DIMM slot ejectors at each end of the memory socket are fully open (rotated outward) to accept the new DIMM.
  • Align the notch in the bottom edge of the DIMM with the key in the DIMM socket.
  • Press down evenly on both top corners of the DIMM until the ejectors snap over the cutouts in the left and right edges of the DIMM

14. Install the top cover.
15. Remove Antistatic Measures.
16. Reinstall the Server Chassis in the Rack.
17. Reconnect Cables to the Server.
18. Power On the Server.
19. Clean the error message using the section C - Post-Repair Procedures from the document: PSH Procedural Article for ILOM-Based Diagnosis <Document: 1155200.1>
