Goal

How to remove and replace a RAID Expansion Module (REM) Cache Battery in a Sun Blade X4-2B Server Module.

Maintenance window may be required

TIME ESTIMATE: 30 minutes

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

Data backup not required, but recommended as a precaution.
Orderly shutdown of applications.
Shutdown of OS and power down of server.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

Prepare the server for service.

1. Power off the server module.

2. Remove the server module from the chassis and lay it flat, cover side up, on an anti-static mat.

Caution - After removing the server from the chassis, insert a filler panel into an empty slot to reduce the possibility of a system shutdown.

3. Attach an anti-static wrist strap.

4. Remove the top cover.

5. Lift the REM latch upwards.

6. Remove the existing REM card by pulling the REM card out at an angle, away from the support bracket.

7. Turn the REM over and place on an anti-static mat.

8. Unplug the battery connector from the REM card.

9. Remove the three screws securing the old REM battery to the card and remove the battery.

10. Attach the new battery to the REM card and insert the three screws to secure the battery.

11. Attach the battery connector from the battery to the REM card.

12. Close the REM latch downwards.

13. Slide the new REM card at an angle under the flanges into the support bracket in the server module, then press it carefully into the connector.

14. Install the cover on the server.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Boot up system and verify full functionality
