Goal

How to remove and replace a Fabric Expansion Module (FEM) in a Sun Blade X4-2B Server Module.

Solution

TIME ESTIMATE: 30 minutes

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

A data backup is not a pre-requisite but is a wise precaution.
The customer should conduct an orderly software system shutdown.

Then power down the system and disconnect the Power Cord.


WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
Replace a FEM Card

1. Power off the server module.

2. Remove the server module from the chassis and lay it flat, cover side up, on an anti-static mat.
Caution - After removing the server from the chassis, insert a filler panel into an empty slot to reduce the possibility of a system shutdown.


3. Remove the cover from the server module.


4. Perform one of the following:
* Remove the existing FEM board.  To remove an existing FEM pull the board up at an angle from the opposite end not in the support bracket.
or
* Remove protective shipping cap from the FEM connector.


5. Perform the following steps to install the FEM board:
a. Slide the FEM board at an angle into the support bracket.

  Note – Always install a single width form factor FEM in FEM 0.


b. Press the FEM board carefully into the connector.


6. Install the cover on the server.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
