Sun ZFS Storage 7320 - Version All Versions to All Versions [Release All Releases]
7000 Appliance OS (Fishworks)

Goal

To add DE2-24C/P disk trays into an array configuration that exists that has J4410 Riverwalk-2 disk trays already.

Solution

NOTE: This process is NOT valid for and CANNOT be done on any 7x10 type array.

In order to accomplish this task, the following items are required:

  1.  The 2013.1.0.1 also known as ak-2013.06.05.0.1 array code firmware (or later) can be obtained though this document:

Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance: Software Updates (Doc ID 2021771.1)

NOTE: That specific code version may not be available any code version greater than that will be OK.

  2.  Sufficient quantity of the part number 7103791 4-port (4x4 SAS-2) 6Gb/s external HBAs to replace all current existing 2-port 6Gb/s external HBAs currently in the array including boths heads if clustered.

Note: The new HBA has 4 ports whereas the old HBA only has 2 ports
Note: Port zero of the 4-port Thebe 2 card is the one closest to the pci-e connector.

To intermix of DE2-24C and J4410's use 6 Gb SAS 16 Port PCIe HBA cards running Appliance Kit version ak-2013.1
Important: When intermixing disk arrays J4410 and DE2 on the same system (includes cluster) only supported with Thebe-2 HBAs
Sun Storage 6 Gb SAS 16 Port PCIe HBA (4 port HBA cards) J4410s (port 0 & 1) *AND* DE2 trays (port 2 & 3)
Sun Storage 6 Gb SAS   8 Port PCIe HBA (2 port HBA cards) J4410s *OR* DE2 trays

Can not intermix 8-Port 6Gbps SAS-2 HBA (Thebe-EXT) with 16-Port 6Gbps SAS-2 RAID HBA (Thebe-2) cards on the same chassis or clustered configuration.

  3.  Sufficient quantity of the new mini SAS HD connector to mini SAS connector cables to replace all current SAS-2 HBA to disk tray connections and for all new added SAS-2 HBA to disk tray connections.

New cable numbers are:

For the 7420 use these cables: part #7023009:   FRU, Cable Assy, 3-meter mini SAS to mini SAS HD and part #7056300:   Cable Assy, Mini SAS to Mini SAS HD, 6 Meter

For the 7320 use this cable: part #7079302:   MINI-SAS/MINI-SAS HD,LP PLUG,3M    (This is the low profile cable specific for the 7320)

NOTE: This process is going to require the upgrade of all involved arrays to the 2013.1.0.1 array code version (or later) and all nodes involved must be upgraded at the same time as part of this process.

NOTE: A 'live' cluster upgrade of the required HBAs may be possible.  Please see the following EIS documents:

http://eis.oraclecorp.com/checklists/pdf/7320-Intermix-Upgrade.pdf and
http://eis.oraclecorp.com/checklists/pdf/7420-Intermix-Upgrade.pdf

Step 1:  Document and verify the current J4410 Riverwalk-2 disk tray cabling, paying particular attention to the disk tray to HBA cabling.

Verify that all disk pathing is OK within the array.

Step 2:  Download the 2013.1.0.1 array code version (or later) to all nodes involved and upgrade all nodes to this version. Both nodes of a cluster must be upgraded to this version before proceeding.

Verify that there are no problems and that all firmware upgrades are complete.

Step 3:  Power down the node (both nodes if cluster) and replace all of the current 2-port SAS-2 external HBAs with the new 4-port SAS-2 external HBAs.

Reconnect all current existing J4410 Riverwalk-2 disk trays to the new 4-port HBAs using the new cables. Use ports 0 and 1 for the J4410 Riverwalk-2 disk tray connections.

So if a disk tray cable previously went to port 0 of the old SAS-2 HBA for a particular slot, connect the new cable to port 0 of the new HBA installed in that same slot.

Note: Port zero of the 4-port Thebe 2 card is the one closest to the pci-e connector.

NOTE: At this point there should be no cables plugged into ports 2 and 3 of any 4-port SAS-2 HBA.

NOTE: Please be aware of the following issue when using the new cables:

Sun Storage 7000 7320 7420 zs3-2 zs3-4 disks not showing or 4 port thebe2 hba disappears after cabling up disk trays(Doc ID 1643673.1)

NOTE: Do NOT connect the DE2-24C/P disk trays at this time.

NOTE: Make sure there is NO intercabling between any J4410 Riverwalk-2 disk trays and any DE2-24C/P disk trays. These disk tray types must be kept in separate cabling setups (loops).

Step 4:  Power on and bring up the array - both nodes if a cluster.

Verify no problems exist and that the current storage pools are available.

Verify pathing to the current J4410 Riverwalk-2 disk trays.

Step 5:  Verify DE2-24C/P disk tray intercabling as per documentation and that all trays have all power on.

Attach these disk tray cables to the 4-port SAS-2 HBA, ports 2 and 3 - verifying connections in the Appliance CLI/BUI, as each cable is added.

Once all cables have been added, verify that there are no problems on any array.

Step 6:  At this point, the new added trays are ready for storage pool configuration.
