Goal

This document explains why the "New" and "Delete" Virtual Disk (Vdisk) functions may not be available in your view of Sun Storage Common Array Manager (CAM) and provides steps to gain access to these functions.

Solution

The "New" and "Delete" Vdisk options are only available on arrays running 7.xx firmware.

Arrays with firmware 06.xx have their Vdisk created automatically with the volume creation. The specification of the Vdisk is based on the profile for the selected pool used for the volume creation.

With the firmware 07.xx, the Vdisk can still be automatically created with the volume creation; however this firmware level also allows the manual creation or deletion of the vdisk.

  1. To determine the proper steps to follow, please check which version of firmware is running on the array. The following document describes how to identify which firmware revision is installed on your array:

<Document 1021067.1> How to Verify Sun Storage[TM] Array Firmware Using Sun Storage Common Array Manager or SANtricity

  2. If your firmware revision is 06.xx or lower, and you would like to take the advantage to create and/or delete vdisks directly, please go to step 3. If it is 07.xx, please contact the Oracle Global Support Services for assistance.

  3. To upgrade the array firmware from 06.xx to 07.xx, please refer to the following documents, according to your array model:

<Document 1319254.1> Procedure to Upgrade the Sun StorageTek[TM] 2500 Series Array Controller Firmware from 06.xx to 07.xx
<Document 1131593.1> Procedure to Upgrade the Sun StorageTek[TM] 6540 Array, 6140 Array or FLX380 Storage Array from Firmware 06.xx to 07.xx

Please note that early 07.xx releases presented a number of defects regarding Vdisk creation. We recommend upgrading to the most recent 07.xx release. To install the latest 07.xx release, please make sure that you have the latest CAM version installed. The following document explains how to install the latest CAM patches and the latest firmware for your array: <Document 1296274.1> How to Download Common Array Manager (CAM) Software and Patches.
